Write Spelling Words on the Window

February 9, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Have you ever let your child write on the window? Mine do all the time. They love it!

So, when thinking of ways to practice spelling words, one of the first ideas I thought of was that we should write spelling words on the window.

It’s not as messy as it sounds, and if you have the right tools, clean up is a breeze.

Write spelling words on the window - yes, really! It's a simple and fun spelling word activity that will make your kids eager to practice.

How to Set Up

All you need is a pack of window markers and a clean window.

Crayola makes a great set of markers that writes well, is easy to clean, and lasts about as long as any other set of markers.

Once you have a pack of window markers, this activity takes no time at all to set up.

Write Spelling Words on the Window

Have you child write their words on the window once or even a couple of time.

You can even do a practice test. I know, I know, I said no practice tests. But writing on the window makes everything much more fun!

Tip: Clean up is a breeze. Just clean the window with your favorite window cleaner. If you use a non-toxic cleaner, let your child clean up their own spelling words. My girls always get excited to clean windows!

The next time your child has spelling words to practice, hand them a set of window markers and I bet they’ll have a blast while they write spelling words.

Car Spelling Word Tracing

February 8, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Raise your hands if your kids like to play with toy cars!

It seems to be a common toy that most kids like to play with and most kids own a few.

So what better way to make spelling words more fun, than by using a favorite toy.

Grab a toy car any other toy vehicle and let’s do some car spelling word tracing.

Here's a fun spelling idea: practice with some car spelling word tracing. It's a fun and unique spelling activity for kids.

How to set-up your car spelling word tracing activity

Set up can be as simple as grabbing a few cars and finding a flat surface. The floor is perfect.

If you would like (and this is what I did in the pictures), use painter’s tape to make your words on the floor.

Practice spelling with toy cars

When it’s time to practice, use a car to trace your taped words by rolling it along the lines.

Or, you can just use the car to “write” the words by moving your toy in the direction of each letter.

Have your child spell the words out loud as they trace for a little added practice. Or, you can have them watch and try to guess the word someone else is spelling with their toy car.

This is a fun and easy way to practice spelling words and one that will appeal to any kid who likes play with toy cars.

Create a Spelling Words Word Search

February 7, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Did you know that it’s really easy to create your own word search?

It looks quite difficult, and honestly it would be quite time consuming if you made one from scratch. (I should know, I have before.) But, luckily, there are some online resources to help you make one quickly and easily.

So, if you’ve got a word puzzle loving kid, turn their spelling words into a fun spelling words word search.

Word Search Puzzle Maker

I found two different online puzzle makers that are easy to use.

My favorite (and the one pictured) was the Word Search Puzzle Maker at A to Z Teacher Stuff. This one came out on top only because I liked the look of the puzzle a little bit better.

The other good option is the PuzzleMaker at Discovery Education. Both will walk you step-by-step through the process and both print nicely. You’ll have a personalized word search in minutes.

Note: Both of these puzzle makers are for personal or classroom use only. Meaning, it’s perfectly alright to make as many as you want for your own child at home or even for use in the classroom. But, you can’t distribute them from a blog, a book, or… well, you get the picture.

Practice Spelling With a Spelling Words Word Search

I’m a big fan of word searches and I know many people are.

I like these puzzle makers because they make it so easy to create a word search using your child’s spelling list.

It takes minutes to do, so it would be easy enough to make one up for each list if your child enjoys this.

It does help them study, because they have to pay attention to all the letters as they search through the puzzle.

It’s a great independent activity and just plain fun.

Pinprick Spelling Words

February 6, 2016 By Terri Thompson

I’ve always loved doing small detailed work, which is why this activity is one of my favorites.

Today we’re going to use pinpricks to trace our spelling words.

This is a quiet, detailed activity and it’s a great way to really study the words. Not only that, but it’s fun!

Let’s practice our pinprick spelling words.

Use your fine motor skills to practice your spelling words with this Pinprick Spelling Words activity. It's a great way to really study your words.

Set-up your pinprick spelling words

You need some pins, a blanket or pillow, and a piece of paper with your spelling words written out.

Write out the spelling words on your paper. Write them big, but not too big.

Remember, the bigger the word, the more pinpricks it will take. So, large words will take a long time to pinprick!

Use your fine motor skills to practice your spelling words with this Pinprick Spelling Words activity. It's a great way to really study your words.

Next grab a pillow or blanket. Use something that will not be damaged by a pinprick, since the pin will be going into it. Choose something stable and something that the paper will fit fully on.

I folded up a flannel blanket. If you do use a blanket, make sure to fold it enough so that the pin does not go all the way through.

Trace your spelling words with pinpricks

Once you’re all set up, have your child use the pin to trace all their words with pinpricks.

This is great detailed work that will also give their fine motor skills a workout. It’s a great choice for quiet work and a fun choice too!
