Make Scrabble Tile Spelling Words

February 17, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you have a Scrabble game at home?

It’s one of my favorites. It’s a fun game to play and I love that you can borrow the tiles for all sorts of other reasons.

It seemed only natural to grab them and use them to practice our spelling words with this activity, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

Put away the paper and pencil and hit your board game supply with this fun way to practice spelling words, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

To set-up:

You need your spelling list and the tiles from a Scrabble game (or a Bananagram game).

This is another activity (like many of these spelling activities) that needs no set up.

Put away the paper and pencil and hit your board game supply with this fun way to practice spelling words, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

Make Scrabble Tile Spelling Words

One by one, go through your spelling list and spell your words using Scrabble tiles. After each word, push the letters aside and move on to the next word.

Special note: While it’s fun to try to make as many words as possible before mixing the letters into the pile again, chances are you’ll run out of tiles before getting through an entire spelling list. You’ll have to push the letter tiles aside and mix them up again often.

Use your Scrabble tiles to make spelling word practice fun. Can you think of other fun ways to use letter tiles?

To set-up:

You’ll need a large flat plastic container and some shaving cream. We used a plastic cafeteria-style tray and it worked perfectly.

Squirt your shaving cream in a thick layer on top of the tray. Now it’s time to write.

Write Shaving Cream Spelling Words

Have your child use their fingers to write each of their words in the shaving cream. As they go along, their hands will get messier and messier. But, that’s the fun of it!

Special note: You won’t see the words as your child writes, but that’s not really the point. Just let them write and enjoy the sensory process. You’ll be washing it all away anyway!

Clean up is easy. Just rinse your tray off in the bathtub. If you’ve got a large sink, you can use that but my sinks were all too small. If you get any shaving cream on the clothes, don’t worry. Just wipe it off and it will come out in the next washing. Shaving cream may be messy, but it’s easy to clean.

Have a little messy fun the next time your child needs to practice spelling words. They’ll have a blast writing Shaving Cream Spelling Words!

Practice Spelling with Pipe Cleaner Words

February 14, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you call these things pipe cleaners or chenille stems?

It’s a big debate isn’t it? When I was a kid we called them pipe cleaners, so I still use that term. But, no matter what you call them, you can make just about anything with them.

And today we’re using them to practice spelling when we make Pipe Cleaner Words.

You don't have to write your words to practice spelling, instead your can bend, twist, and curve to create Pipe Cleaner Words.

To set-up:

You need nothing more than a supply of pipe cleaners (a.k.a chenille stems) and a list of spelling words.

You don't have to write your words to practice spelling, instead your can bend, twist, and curve to create Pipe Cleaner Words.

Make Your Pipe Cleaner Words

Fold and bend your pipe cleaners to make each of the letters in a spelling word. Straighten it out and create the next word. Keep going and work your way through your spelling list.

This is a great quiet activity and good for kids who like to use their hands to create. It’s a nice break from writing, too.

When you have more than one kid working on spelling words, challenge them to a race. Who can create a work the quickest?

It’s so much fun to learn your spelling words when you get to make them out of pipe cleaners! The next time you need to practice spelling, create some Pipe Cleaner Words.

Practice at Home by Painting Spelling Words

February 12, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Put down the pencil and pick up a paint brush. Today, we’re painting spelling words.

This activity is always so popular with my youngest daughter that I’m not sure why we don’t do it more often.

We’re still writing, we’re still practicing, we’re just using a different writing utensil.

Get a little creative when you practice spelling words at home. Grab some brushes and some paint and have fun painting spelling words.

How to set-up:

Once you have all the supplies, it’s very easy to pull this activity together. You’ll need paint, paintbrushes, and paper. Brightly colored construction paper is fun, but not necessary. Plain white printer paper always works.

Tip: Save an old flat sheet from the trash bin or pick one up for the thrift store. Use it to cover your table when painting. I fold ours a couple of times before covering our table and the paint never leaks through. Stains don’t matter and it’s easy to toss the sheet in the washer when it’s needed.

Get a little creative when you practice spelling words at home. Grab some brushes and some paint and have fun painting spelling words.

Painting Spelling Words

Invite your child to paint their spelling words instead of writing them. Let them choose the color of paper and paint to make it more inviting. You can provide a rainbow of colors or just one color. It really doesn’t matter.

The process of painting makes spelling practice so much more appealing. My girls enjoy doing art projects, so this often feels more like art than it does writing, which is why sometimes spelling practice leads right into art time!

Make Spelling Words with Letter Stamps

February 10, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you own a set of alphabet stamps? If not, I’d really recommend getting one.

We’ve used our for so many things. We’ve done crafts, used them in learning activities, and made art for them. My girls love to get them out and start creating.

Today, we’re going to use the letter stamps to help us with spelling practice. We’re going to make our spelling words with letter stamps.

Put down the pencil and practice spelling by making your words with letter stamps. It's a simple, quick activity that makes spelling fun.

To set-up:

Grab a set of alphabet stamps, an ink pad, and some paper. Set everything out and invite your child to practice their spelling words by stamping them.

This is a great option for a child who just doesn’t want to write on that particular day. (We can all get tired of writing, can’t we?) Or, it’s just a fun way to mix things up.

My girls used stamps a lot when they were in preschool, but we don’t often get them out now. When we do, they’re excited. And, that certainly makes a not-so-fun task much more fun.

Write your spelling words with letter stamps

Once you have everything set up, it’s easy for your kids to sit down and write their spelling words with letter stamps when they need to practice.

Tip: Provide your child with a damp rag if they are going to use multiple colors of ink. We gently clean the ink off the stamps before switching colors and before putting them away to keep our stamps and ink in good condition.

Let your kids take a little break with writing and have them “write” their words with alphabet stamps. It’s a fun option!
