Pinprick Spelling Words

February 6, 2016 By Terri Thompson

I’ve always loved doing small detailed work, which is why this activity is one of my favorites.

Today we’re going to use pinpricks to trace our spelling words.

This is a quiet, detailed activity and it’s a great way to really study the words. Not only that, but it’s fun!

Let’s practice our pinprick spelling words.

Use your fine motor skills to practice your spelling words with this Pinprick Spelling Words activity. It's a great way to really study your words.

Set-up your pinprick spelling words

You need some pins, a blanket or pillow, and a piece of paper with your spelling words written out.

Write out the spelling words on your paper. Write them big, but not too big.

Remember, the bigger the word, the more pinpricks it will take. So, large words will take a long time to pinprick!

Use your fine motor skills to practice your spelling words with this Pinprick Spelling Words activity. It's a great way to really study your words.

Next grab a pillow or blanket. Use something that will not be damaged by a pinprick, since the pin will be going into it. Choose something stable and something that the paper will fit fully on.

I folded up a flannel blanket. If you do use a blanket, make sure to fold it enough so that the pin does not go all the way through.

Trace your spelling words with pinpricks

Once you’re all set up, have your child use the pin to trace all their words with pinpricks.

This is great detailed work that will also give their fine motor skills a workout. It’s a great choice for quiet work and a fun choice too!

Disappearing Spelling Words

February 5, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Ask you kids if they want to make their spelling words disappear. What do you think they’d say? I can imagine lots of grins and giggles.

With this activity, we’re going to do things a bit different and practice our spelling words by making them disappear. I promise your kids are going to have fun with this disappearing spelling words activity!

To set-up

You will need coffee filters, washable markers, newspaper, and a spray bottle filled with water.

Lay down newspaper and set your coffee filters on top.

This will get quite wet and messy, and the colors will bleed, so use something to protect your table in addition to the newspaper. We like to use an old sheet.

Practice your spelling words and then make them disappear with this fun Disappearing Spelling Words activity. It's such a fun way to practice!

Disappearing Spelling Words!

Have your child write their spelling words on the coffee filter with the washable markers. You will need to use washable markers (don’t get out your Sharpies!) to get the words to disappear. This step, quite frankly, is the practice part. The rest is all for fun – a bonus for writing out all your spelling words.

Now, it’s time for fun. Spray, spray, and spray the coffee filters with water until the spelling words disappear. If you’re lucky, you might get some pretty tie-dyed coffee filters. But, one thing your guaranteed of is a whole lot of fun!

The next time your child needs to practice spelling words, tell them to make to try disappearing spelling words!

Spelling Outside with a Driveway Letter Grid

February 4, 2016 By Terri Thompson

I’ve lost count of how many learning games we’ve played on the driveway.

We’ve tried math, sight words, and now we’re going to try spelling outside with a driveway letter grid.

This driveway spelling game is a fun way to learn and a great way to burn some energy after school.

So, grab some sidewalk chalk and let’s get spelling with this fun, active learning game.

Practice spelling outside with a driveway letter grid. Hop, skip, run, and jump your way through all your spelling words.

Create Your Driveway Letter Grid

Grab your sidewalk chalk and find a large area of concrete.

Write out the alphabet in a large grid. You’ll want it big enough so that your child can stand on an individual letter, but not so big that they can’t easily move from one letter to another.

Tip: Enlist your kids to help create the grid, no need to write it all yourself!

Now that your letter grid is ready, you’re ready to practice spelling outside!

Practice Spelling Outside

To play, you  will want to call out one of your child’s spelling words and have them spell the words by jumping to each letter spelling aloud as they go.

If there are 2 letters in a row (i.e. tt or ee), just jump twice on that letter.

Sometimes they may have to do some creative leaping if the letters are too far apart!

More more fun, add additional movements. Hop, skip, run, tiptoe, march, or take giant steps. Move a different way for each spelling word.

It’s so easy to have fun with a driveway letter grid!

Create Play Dough Spelling Words

February 3, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Even though my kids are older now (ages 6 and 8), they still love to play with play dough. I try to have a batch made up all the time so they can play anytime they want.

So, it seemed the logical conclusion to use play dough to practice spelling words. Sensory play and spelling practice all tied into one when you create Play Dough Spelling Words.

Have fun while practicing spelling when you create Play Dough Spelling Words. It's fun and creative way to do spelling homework.

How to set-up

You need a batch of play dough and a list of spelling words. You can use store-bough play dough or make your own batch.

I love to use the Kool-Aid Dyed Play Dough recipe from Mama Miss. That’s what we used for this batch – using grape Kool-Aid.

The Best-Ever No-Cook Play Dough recipe from The Imagination Tree is another great choice for this activity. It’s easy to make and only takes four minutes.

Or, you can check out my Play Dough Pinterest board for many more fun play dough recipes.

Create your play dough spelling words

Roll the play dough into snakes and form them into letters.

Make a word, then roll it all back up into a ball.

Make all the words on your list or just a segment of the words.

Add a challenge

Can you figure out a way to make the letters without starting with snakes?

Can you make tiny letters? How about huge letters?

How many words can you make before you run out of play dough?

It’s so easy to combine play with learning, especially when you create Play Dough Spelling Words!

Make Words with Alphabet Clothespins

February 2, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Practicing spelling words doesn’t always have to require writing them in one way or the other. Today we’re going to give our fine motor skills a workout and use alphabet clothespins to build our words.

This does take a bit of prep time initially, but once you’ve made a set of alphabet clothespins, you can use them for spelling words and sight words all year long.

Use a set of alphabet clothespins to practice spelling words, sight words, and word families. They're easy to make and fun to use.

How to make your alphabet clothespins

To prep this activity, you need some plain wooden clothespins, Sharpies, and index cards.

Write each letter of the alphabet on your clothespins. You’ll want to include some letters more than once, such as your vowels and popular letters.

Take a peek through the spelling list to make sure you don’t need any letter more than 2 times. If so, you’ll want to include those extra letters.

Also, write each spelling word on an index card.

Tip: Keep some extra clothespins on hand so that it’s easy to make some more alphabet clothespins in case you ever need them.

Use your alphabet clothespins for spelling practice

Have your child choose an index card and make the word by clipping the alphabet clothespins on the index card. Unless you’ve made a whole pile of alphabet clothespins, your child will need to then remove the clothespins before moving on to the next word.

Tip: Store the clothespins and index cards in a bag or basket so that it’s easy to access for your child. I have a feeling they will love practicing their spelling words this way!
