Make Spelling Fun by Writing with Cotton Swabs

February 1, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Sometimes all it takes is switching out the pencil for another tool to make spelling fun.

With today’s idea, we used cotton swabs and paint to write out all our spelling words.

Make spelling fun by putting the pencil aside and grabbing something fun to write with, like this activity to write spelling words with cotton swabs.

How to set-up:

All you need are some cotton swabs, paint, and paper. The colorful construction paper makes it even more fun, but isn’t necessary.

Put a little bit of paint on a plastic lid or other similar flat container so that it’s easier to dip the cotton swabs.

Grab your list of spelling words and you’re ready to go.

It’s time to make spelling fun!

Have your child use the cotton swab and paint to write all their words.

The handwriting won’t be neat and tidy. It will most likely be big and sloppy. But, that’s not the point. Just the act of forming the letters will help them remember their spelling words.

Let them have fun! If your child wants to get artistic, let them.

If they want to make big block letters, let them.

And if they want to make it swirly and colorful, let them.

The more fun it is, the more willing your kids will be to practice their spelling words.

The next time that spelling list comes home, make spelling fun by putting the pencil aside and grabbing the cotton swabs and paint instead.

Spelling Word Scramble

January 31, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you like word scrambles? I did as a kid (and still do now).

That’s why I thought it would be fun to take a list of spelling words and turn it into a fun game. I was hoping that it wouldn’t take forever, and it turns out that a Spelling Word Scramble is super-easy to make. Yay!

Are you ready to make one?

How to create a Spelling Word Scramble

All you need to do is grab a sheet of paper and your child’s spelling list.

Simply mix up the letters in each of the words and write them down on your sheet of paper.

It seems like it should take a long time, but it really doesn’t. It took me around 5 minutes to create this list of 10 words.

Don’t make it complicated. Just mix up the letters. Cross off each letter as you write them down to keep track of what letters you’ve used. But, I discovered that four and five letters words are really not difficult to mix up.

It’s Game Time!

Have your child try to unscramble the letters to find their spelling words.

It will give them a chance pay attention to the letters in each word and how they fit together.

This is a fun and a nice change from all the traditional ways to practice spelling words.

Your puzzle-loving kids will enjoy practicing their spelling words with a spelling word scramble.

Type Spelling Words on a Computer

January 30, 2016 By Terri Thompson

My girls love screen time. And, really, don’t all kids?

I have discovered that they’re not all that picky about what they doing during that screen time.

Sometimes it’s something fun, sometimes it’s something educational, and sometimes we’re just watching an interesting YouTube video.

So, when it occurred to me that we could use my laptop to type spelling words, my girls were eager to get going!

All kids love screen time, don't they? Give them a little extra screen time while they do their homework by letting them type spelling words on a computer.

How to set-up

Grab your laptop (or sit down in front of a desktop) and open up your word processing program. My girls like a large font when they do this, so go ahead and get everything set up the way you like it.

Tip: Mix it up a little and let your child choose a fun font. Swirly, bold, it doesn’t matter. But, if it makes it more fun – why not?

Type Spelling Words

Have your child type their spelling words. Call the words out to them and let them spell by memory. Or, if they’re just learning their words, let them refer to the list.

This is such a win-win activity. The kids get screen time. They’re practicing their spelling words and they’re getting familiar with typing in a word processing program. Let’s face it, that’s a skill they’re going to need in life anyway.

When they’re done, I just close everything down. We don’t save or print; there’s really no need. This is such a fun (and very low-prep) way to practice spelling words.

Fun Spelling Practice with Dry Beans

January 29, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Have you ever used dry beans in an educational activity?

We’ve used them as math counters, used them in art, and even used them as the base of a sensory bin. There are so many things you can do.

That inexpensive bag of beans has been used a lot. Plus, the dry beans will last forever.

Now, we’re using them for some fun spelling practice.

Are you looking for some fun spelling practice ideas? Here's a great idea, make words with dry beans. It's a fun way to practice.

How to set-up this fun spelling practice idea

Pour your dry beans in a small container, print out a spelling list, and provide an open table for creating.

That’s it for the set-up. Easy, isn’t it?

You can make it as inviting as you would like. I added the beans to a small basket and wrote the spelling words on index cards.

Write your spelling words with dry beans

Using the spelling list for reference, have your child spell out each of their words. They’ll use the dry beans to form each of the letters in the words.

This activity, obviously, takes a lot longer time than just writing the words. But, it gives your child a chance to really study their list as they build their words letter by letter.

Hopefully, this is a nice and relaxing way to study. Your fingers are creating, your fine motor skills are getting a work-out, and you’re concentrating on the words one letter at a time.

It’s a nice change from practice tests!

Movement Spelling: Walk Your Spelling Words

January 27, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Sometimes, the best thing to do after a long day in school is to get outside.

So often, homework means that the kids are stuck inside even longer.

Luckily, practicing your spelling words doesn’t have to happen inside. We can go outside and do some movement spelling.

Grab the sidewalk chalk, head outside, and get the whole body moving while you walk your spelling words.

Go outside to learn when you practice this fun movement spelling idea: walk your words. It's a great idea for kids who need to move.

How to set-up this movement spelling activity

All you need is some sidewalk chalk and a large area of concrete. Write your child’s spelling words all over the driveway. Write them big!

Tip: Have your child write the words for a little bit of extra practice. So, with one simple activity, you’ve practiced your spelling words twice.

Walk your spelling words

Now, it’s time to practice. Have your child walk along all the words, spelling it in their head along the way.

This works so well for kids that need to move while learning (kinesthetic learners).

If your child’s learning style, like kinesthetic learning, is not being met in school, give them as many opportunities as you can at home to learn their own way. Let them walk their spelling words if that is the way they learn best.

It’s also great for any kid who is tired of sitting all day long. Movement spelling is a great way to get outside, get moving, and get learning.
