Practice Spelling with Letter Stamps and Play Dough

February 22, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you remember early on in our 31 Ways to Practice Spelling Words series when we got out the play dough to make our words?

Well, today I’ve got another fun way to use play dough for your spelling words. We’re going to combine it with our letter stamps and have a little fun while we Practice Spelling with Letter Stamps and Play Dough.

You don't have to pick up a pencil to practice spelling words. Instead practice spelling with letter stamps and play dough. #spelling #education #CreativeFamilyFun

To set-up

You’ll need some play dough and a set of letter stamps. Mold the play dough to make a flat surface. We’ll be using the play dough as our writing surface.

Practice spelling with letter stamps and play dough

Have your child use the letter stamps to stamp their spelling words on the paper. Press lightly! If you press too hard, you can’t see the letters all that well.

You don't have to pick up a pencil to practice spelling words. Instead practice spelling with letter stamps and play dough.

Tip: I love to make my own play dough, but store-bought works just as well. If you do want to make your own play dough my favorite recipe is Mama Miss’s Kool-Aid Dyed Play Dough. I made this batch with Tropical Punch and a little extra red food coloring.

After your child has finished stamping all their spelling words, they’ll probably want to play with the play dough. I’m a firm believer that you’re never too old for play dough. It’s not just for toddlers and preschoolers! So, encourage them to play and get creative.

Don’t forget to check the craft closet the next time your child needs to practice spelling words so they can practice spelling with letter stamps and play dough.

Watercolor Resist Spelling Words

February 20, 2016 By Terri Thompson

One of my favorite art techniques to play around with is watercolor resist.

It’s fun and fascinating. And, when I love something, I try to find ways to incorporate in all areas.

We’ve made plenty of art, we’ve also used this technique to write poetry, and now we’re using it to practice our spelling words with this Watercolor Resist Spelling Words project.

Have fun with this creative spelling practice idea, Watercolor Resist Spelling Words. Make a little art, have fun, and learn your spelling words.

How to set-up:

You’ll need white oil pastels (or white crayon), watercolor paints, white paper, and a cup of water.

Set everything up as an invitation along with your list of spelling words.

How to create Watercolor Resist Spelling Words

Have your child write their spelling words on the paper with the white oil pastel. It will be hard to see at first, but the fun will happen when they start painting.

After they’ve filled the paper with their spelling words, your child can get started painting.

Paint your paper all one color, make patterns, or use every single color on your watercolor palette. This is time to get creative. Paint flowers, heart, or clouds over the top. Anything goes. As your child starts painting, their spelling words will magically appear.

I always love art, so this activity doesn’t even feel like studying. But, in reality, your child will practice writing their words and they’ll read them a few time while painting. Watercolor Resist Spelling Words is fun, colorful, and perfect for any kid that loves art.

Make Scrabble Tile Spelling Words

February 17, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you have a Scrabble game at home?

It’s one of my favorites. It’s a fun game to play and I love that you can borrow the tiles for all sorts of other reasons.

It seemed only natural to grab them and use them to practice our spelling words with this activity, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

Put away the paper and pencil and hit your board game supply with this fun way to practice spelling words, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

To set-up:

You need your spelling list and the tiles from a Scrabble game (or a Bananagram game).

This is another activity (like many of these spelling activities) that needs no set up.

Put away the paper and pencil and hit your board game supply with this fun way to practice spelling words, Scrabble Tile Spelling Words.

Make Scrabble Tile Spelling Words

One by one, go through your spelling list and spell your words using Scrabble tiles. After each word, push the letters aside and move on to the next word.

Special note: While it’s fun to try to make as many words as possible before mixing the letters into the pile again, chances are you’ll run out of tiles before getting through an entire spelling list. You’ll have to push the letter tiles aside and mix them up again often.

Use your Scrabble tiles to make spelling word practice fun. Can you think of other fun ways to use letter tiles?

February 16, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Ready to get messy? Today, we’re practicing our spelling words with the messiest activity in this whole series. We’re writing them in shaving cream!

To set-up:

You’ll need a large flat plastic container and some shaving cream. We used a plastic cafeteria-style tray and it worked perfectly.

Squirt your shaving cream in a thick layer on top of the tray. Now it’s time to write.

Get a little messy while you learn with this fun way to practice spelling words, Shaving Cream Spelling Words. It's so much fun!

Write Shaving Cream Spelling Words

Have your child use their fingers to write each of their words in the shaving cream. As they go along, their hands will get messier and messier. But, that’s the fun of it!

Special note: You won’t see the words as your child writes, but that’s not really the point. Just let them write and enjoy the sensory process. You’ll be washing it all away anyway!

Clean up is easy. Just rinse your tray off in the bathtub. If you’ve got a large sink, you can use that but my sinks were all too small. If you get any shaving cream on the clothes, don’t worry. Just wipe it off and it will come out in the next washing. Shaving cream may be messy, but it’s easy to clean.

Have a little messy fun the next time your child needs to practice spelling words. They’ll have a blast writing Shaving Cream Spelling Words!

Practice Spelling with Pipe Cleaner Words

February 14, 2016 By Terri Thompson

Do you call these things pipe cleaners or chenille stems?

It’s a big debate isn’t it? When I was a kid we called them pipe cleaners, so I still use that term. But, no matter what you call them, you can make just about anything with them.

And today we’re using them to practice spelling when we make Pipe Cleaner Words.

You don't have to write your words to practice spelling, instead your can bend, twist, and curve to create Pipe Cleaner Words.

Disclosure: This post contains Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for more details.

To set-up:

You need nothing more than a supply of pipe cleaners (a.k.a chenille stems) and a list of spelling words.

You don't have to write your words to practice spelling, instead your can bend, twist, and curve to create Pipe Cleaner Words.

Make Your Pipe Cleaner Words

Fold and bend your pipe cleaners to make each of the letters in a spelling word. Straighten it out and create the next word. Keep going and work your way through your spelling list.

This is a great quiet activity and good for kids who like to use their hands to create. It’s a nice break from writing, too.

When you have more than one kid working on spelling words, challenge them to a race. Who can create a work the quickest?

It’s so much fun to learn your spelling words when you get to make them out of pipe cleaners! The next time you need to practice spelling, create some Pipe Cleaner Words.
