Heart Collage Valentines Cards

January 24, 2019 By Terri Thompson

Valentine’s Day always brings out the crafter in us.

We love to get out the red and pink paper, scissors, glue, doilies, stickers, and every odd and end imaginable.

Sometimes the result is just a lot of fun time creating.

And, sometimes the result is a pretty Valentine’s Day card we can send to family and friends like these Heart Collage Valentines.

Make beautiful Valentines cards out of textured collages with this Heart Collage Valentines craft for kids. They're so much fun to make!

For this craft, we used our scrap bits and pieces to make some amazing collages, which we then transformed into simple cards. When we got done, we had created these pretty Collage Heart Valentines.

Supplies Needed

Collage materials (paper scraps, fabric scraps, ribbon, tape, foam pieces, felt, magazine cut-outs, etc.)
Scissors (both plain & fancy if you have them)
Paper
Glue
Cardstock

How to make a Heart Collage Valentine

Our first step was creating our heart collage.

I presented my girls with a basket that was full of collage materials, all of which were either pink or red. We had shiny fabric scraps, felt pieces, scrapbook paper, magazine cutouts, pieces of red crepe streamer, and just about anything we could find in our crafting stash.

The girls arranged and glued until they were satisfied with their Valentine collages.

While we were waiting for our collages to dry, we folded our cardstock into note cards. If you plan on mailing these cards, simply cut them to fit in whatever envelopes you happen to have at home.

Then, using some scrap cardboard, we made a heart template to use for cutting our collages. I made a heart that was big enough to fill the space on our cards because we wanted only one heart collage per card.

After our collages were dry, we traced our heart template to the back of our collages.

Note: If you trace the heart on the back, once you cut it out you won’t have any pencil lines!

Finally, we glued our hearts to the front of our note cards, added a special message, and our Heart Collage Valentine cards were ready to go!

I love how a simple collage turned these hearts into works of art! This Valentines craft was so much fun to do. It’s perfect for both a large and small group of kids.

What kinds of Valentines are you sending out this year? I bet there’s a special person who would love receiving one of these Heart Collage Valentines!

Valentine Sensory Bags for Toddlers

January 23, 2019 By Trisha

Are you looking for a mess free Valentine’s Day activity for young children? You’ll want to check out our Valentine sensory bags for toddlers.

They are super easy to put together and my kids just love to play with them.

Have some Valentine's Day fun with these simple Valentine sensory bags for toddlers. They're easy to make and fun to play with!

Valentine Sensory Bags for Toddlers

A sensory bag allows children to experience different textures and manipulate small objects while being contained in a bag. This means it’s mess free and safe for toddlers who tend to put things in their mouths. (You’ll still need to supervise just in case the bag comes open.)

Supplies Needed for the Valentine Sensory Bags

  • Zip top plastic bag (gallon or quart size works well)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Paper towel or cloth
  • Water beads
  • Water
  • Marker
  • Tape
  • Hair gel
  • Craft foam sheets
  • Scissors
  • Plastic hearts (This is the link on Amazon but you can find them at Dollar Tree for a $1.)

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Sensory Bag with Water Beads

Select a zip top plastic bag. I used a gallon size freezer bag but a quart size bag can work, too. Use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel to remove any labels from your bag.

Follow package directions to hydrate your water beads. (It might take a couple hours.) Add the hydrated water beads to your zip top plastic bag. I found my water beads in the craft section of Walmart. Amazon sells water beads for a good price as well. You can find some water beads already hydrated like the Orbeez brand at several retailers or online.

Have some Valentine's Day fun with these simple Valentine sensory bags for toddlers. They're easy to make and fun to play with!

You can add extra water to your plastic bag or just the water beads. Adding water will change the sensory feeling just a little bit.

I drew a heart on the plastic bag for an added valentine element. Encourage your child to push the water beads into the heart or away from the heart. This focuses on fine motor control.

Here’s a great opportunity to practice counting. How many water beads will fit inside the heart?

Have some Valentine's Day fun with these simple Valentine sensory bags for toddlers. They're easy to make and fun to play with!

You can tape the plastic bag shut if you’re worried your child might try to open it. Taping the bag shut may also help keep the bag from popping open when your child pushes on it. I like to use the freezer bags because they are a bit more sturdy and their zippers tend to be stronger.

If the bag moves around on the table while your child is playing, tape it down.

How to Make Valentine Sensory Bags with Gel

Instead of filling the sensory bag with water, you can use hair gel. I found a bottle of clear hair gel at Dollar Tree.

Using hair gel changes the way the sensory bag feels. It’s more squishy than water. Water will work for this sensory bag, too. Just be careful how full you fill the bag. It may pop open if your child pushes too hard.

Have some Valentine's Day fun with these simple Valentine sensory bags for toddlers. They're easy to make and fun to play with!

Feel free to use tape to seal the top of this bag as well (especially if you’re using water instead of hair gel). You can also tape this sensory bag to the table to prevent it from sliding around while your child plays.

Use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel to remove any labels from your zip top plastic bag. Add the bottle of gel to your bag.

Cut out foam hearts and place them in your plastic bag.

Add plastic hearts to the bag. I found our plastic hearts at Dollar Tree.

Have some Valentine's Day fun with these simple Valentine sensory bags for toddlers. They're easy to make and fun to play with!

Encourage your child to push the plastic hearts around. I started with the plastic hearts on top of the foam hearts. My toddler immediately pushed them all off.

Then, I asked him to push the red hearts back on top of the foam hearts.

Practice counting the hearts. How many red hearts are on the blue heart?

Candy Heart Addition Math Activity

January 14, 2019 By Terri Thompson

Do you like candy hearts?

Some people love them. Some people love to hate them. Me, personally, I love them!

Even if you hate them, they’re a fun way to add a little Valentine’s twist to learning.

Grab a box of candy hearts and get ready to practice addition with this fun Valentine’s Day math activity, Candy Heart Addition.

Use a fun candy treat to practice math with Candy Heart Addition Valentine's Day Math Activity. It's fun way to practice adding!

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

The concept for this activity is really simple. We’re going to use candy hearts as a math manipulative to work on our addition skills.

How to set up:

You’ll need three heart doilies, some candy hearts, and a set of math problems.

Pull your addition problems from the group of math facts your child is currently working on. Or, write down some problems from a homework sheet. This is a great way to use a set of flashcards sent home from school.

Write your math problems on a few index cards if you don’t have flashcards.

Once you have your math problems ready, lay out the three doilies and a pile of candy hearts. That’s it. This activity is ready to go.

How to play Candy Heart Addition:

Grab an addition problem. Use candy hearts to put the correct amount on two of the doilies.

In the example above, we need to solve 4+1. We put four candy hearts on one doily and one candy heart on another doily.

Add the two numbers together and put the correct amount of candy hearts on the third doily.

Word through your pile of math problems using your candy heart manipulatives to solve each one.

Extend the fun:

You can use this activity to practice subtraction too. It’s not just an addition activity. Use this activity to supplement whatever your child needs to work on.

Make the activity a little harder. Eliminate the third doily and do the math without the manipulatives.

Use a fun candy treat to practice math with Candy Heart Addition Valentine's Day Math Activity. It's fun way to practice adding!

This activity is a nice way to introduce the concept of addition. Demonstrate how you can count the candy hearts on the first two doilies to find the answer to the equation.

Grab your candy hearts for this fun Valentine’s Day math activity. Candy Heart Addition is a lot of fun – and you don’t have to eat them if you don’t want to!
