Stained Glass Window Valentines

January 16, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Our Valentine’s Day crafting has begun! My oldest has been begging me for a few days now to make Valentines, so out came all the red and pink paper.

Our first project was to make Stained Glass Window Valentines.

These kid-made Stained Glass Window Valentines are such a fun Valentines gift for family and friends. This is such a pretty Valentines craft for kids. #ValentinesDay #kidscrafts #CreativeFamilyFun

This project is so much fun and can be done by kids of all ages. Your toddler can easily make the tissue paper collages. Older kids can tackle the entire project from start to finish. My preschooler did everything except cutting the heart shape from the card stock.

Scrapbook paper or other decorative paper
Contact paper
Tissue paper torn into small pieces
Glue stick

How to make your Stained Glass Window Valentines

I did a bit of prep for this project by cutting heart shapes out of the card stock and scrapbook paper and also cutting the contact paper into small squares (large enough to cover the heart shape you cut).

When cutting out the heart shapes I cut a piece of card stock and a piece of scrapbook paper at the same time by placing them back to back. I wanted the heart shapes to be the same size and in the same location since we would be gluing them together later.

I taped the contact paper down to the table sticky side up and had the girls start layering the tissue paper bits.

Taping down the contact paper is not necessary, but it is a big help! It will keep the contact paper from moving all over the place.

Once the girls were finished with the tissue paper, we layered a second piece of contact paper over the top and trimmed the excess tissue paper from around the edges.

Using the glue stick, cover the piece of card stock with glue, paying close attention to the edges.

Put your contact paper collage over the heart shape then layer the decorative paper over the top, lining up your heart shapes.

Now you have a lovely flat note card with room to add your own message. Make sure to hold your Stained Glass Window Valentines up to the light and see how pretty it is when the light shines through!

Have you started making Valentines yet?

Monochromatic Collage Valentine’s Day Art

January 2, 2018 By Terri Thompson

I love art. I love doing it, I love seeing it, and I love thinking about it.

And, that’s how this monochromatic collage project came about.

It all started when I was browsing Pinterest and stumbled across this blog post for cardboard self-portraits.

My mind started thinking two things: first, what an amazing project it was, and second, what else could we do with a similar method.

After mulling it over in my head a few days, I latched on to the idea of a monochromatic collage.

So, the other day after school, my girls came home to a table full of supplies and we had some fun creating a Monochromatic Collage Valentine’s Day Art Project.

How to set up your art project

I looked through my craft supplies and pulled a variety of things that would provide texture and also would be able to be painted.

I found squares of heavy cardboard (cut from a packing box) to use for our canvas.

And, I tore out the middle of corrugated cardboard, so we could use the rippled part.

I also found craft sticks and a pile of craft foam that hadn’t seen the light of day in a good long while.

I grabbed glue, scissors, paint brushes, and pink and red paint, and spread them out on the table.

Now all that I needed were the artists.

Make your Monochromatic Collage

Once the girls got home from school, they immediately started examining the art table. (They love to have a project waiting for them when they get home.)

I explained the concept: create a collage on your cardboard using the items I had out. Once the glue dries, paint over the whole thing with your choice of paint color.

The results were amazing.

I had one daughter come up with a deliberate plan, the A’s, and set out to create it.

The other had a more organic process and just made it up as she went along.

Once the glue was dry enough to not smear all over our collages when we painted, the girls painted over their project with a single color.

This was such a fun and open-ended art project.

Don’t limit yourself to the supplies I listed, just grab what you have at home.

You only need to think about whether or not you can paint over the supplies you use. That’s it!

It’s time to go create a pretty Monochromatic Collage Valentine’s Day art project.

One thing I love about Valentine’s Day is the chance to make small gestures to let others know how special they are.

Sometimes it’s a simple card to say “You’re Awesome!”

These simple No-Sew Valentine Pencil Toppers are a fun little gift to give your friends. They’re easy to make and easy to personalize for each individual person.

I can’t think of anyone that wouldn’t love receiving this simple homemade Valentine’s Day gift .

Supplies Needed:

Red or pink felt sheets
Scissors
Scrap paper (to make a pattern)
Tacky Glue
Fabric Paint
Pencils

*Note about the glue. I love to use Tacky Glue for projects like this, but if you can’t find this specific glue, you will want to find a glue that works on fabric.

How to make your Valentine Pencil Toppers

Before you get started, you’ll want to make a quick pattern for your hearts from scrap paper. It is the best way to make sure all your hearts are the same size.

Hold the pattern up to a pencil to make sure it is the correct size.

Next, cut out two pieces of felt for each pencil topper. I found it was easiest to fold my pattern in half and also fold my felt. Hold the folded edge of your pattern up to the folded edge of your felt. Cut out your heart.

These no-sew Valentine pencil toppers are the perfect homemade gift to make for your friends. This craft is perfect for both kids and tweens.

Use your Tacky Glue to attach your two heart pieces together. Apply glue around the edge of one heart leaving a section at the bottom open. This will be the opening for your pencil.

Put your second heart on top of the heart with glue and press gently. Press and hold for about 20 seconds, then let dry for a couple of minutes before moving to the next step.

Decorate your hearts

Finally, it’s time to decorate your hearts! Use fabric paint to create your decorations.

We used a 3-D fabric paint in a squirt bottle. I found this worked really well. Felt is not smooth so the squirt bottle was a great way to control your lines.

You can make frilly decorations or funny decorations. We even made a few friendly faces. Anything goes, just let your creativity guide you.

When you’re all done, let your Valentine pencil toppers dry for a few hours before slipping them onto a fun pencil and giving your friends the perfect little Valentine’s Day gift.

They’re getting to the age where they can do more and more of the work themselves. I love this because the more they do in the kitchen the more confident and capable they become.

Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to find some Valentines treats for kids that my girls could make themselves.
