Cork Print Tree Craft for Toddlers

October 9, 2018 By Terri Thompson

When my kids were little (toddlers and preschoolers) we did a lot of craft projects.

We always kept them simple because they certainly weren’t capable of pretty Pinterest crafts when they were that little.

This fun cork print tree craft was a favorite from our list of simple crafts for toddlers. It’s simple, creative, and fun. My girls loved this project!

Supplies Needed:

Cork from a wine bottle
Green washable paint
Brown construction paper
Black marker

Note: Use yellow, orange, and red paint instead of the green paint if you’d like to create a colorful autumn tree.

Set up your tree craft

This project does require a little bit of adult-helper prep.

First, you’ll want to draw a simple tree shape on the brown construction paper with your black marker. You just want to draw a simple trunk and a few branches. As you can see below, you don’t need many drawing skills to draw your tree.

Next, find a flat container for your paint. I usually save a few lids from plastic containers, such as a cream cheese or sour cream container. Clean them up and you can reuse them over and over again for painting projects.

How to make your Cork Print Tree craft

Pour a little bit of green paint onto your plastic lid. Provide a blank tree and a wine cork.

You’ll want to show your child how to dip their cork in the paint and then stamp the leaves on the tree.

Don’t worry about perfection. One of my kids dipped and stamped and the other just rolled her cork around. Both trees turned out great!

Let your kids use their cork stamps as much as they want. Their tree may be full of leaves or have just a few leaves. Maybe all the leaves are on the ground!

You can turn this into a fun fall craft if you switch the colors of paint and use red, yellow, or orange instead.

This fun cork print tree craft is a fun and easy craft for toddlers and preschoolers. It lets them explore paint and printmaking in an age-appropriate way.

Let them get messy and experiment. The experience is what matters. And, you know what, the result is going to be absolutely beautiful because they did it all themselves!

Spider Web Wreath Halloween Craft for Kids

October 4, 2018 By Terri Thompson

I’ve got to give most of the credit for these Halloween wreaths to my 7-year-old. She’s got some great ideas.

I had a much different wreath in mind and only got as far as the first step before she took over and made the perfect spider web wreath.

I love it when the kids take over. They’re ideas are always so much better than my own!

And because my daughter called the shots, the craft not only turned out cute, but it was also a fun process for her.

Grab a paper plate and some yarn to weave your own web with this fun and spooky Spider Web Wreath Halloween craft for kids.

This Halloween spider web wreath is fun to make and appropriate for preschoolers as well as elementary-aged kids.

It’s easy to adapt to differing skill levels and is open to a child’s individual creativity.

Supplies Needed

Paper plate
Scissors
Orange paint
Orange yarn
Clear tape
Plastic spider rings

How to make a Spider Web Wreath

Start by cutting the middle out of your paper plate.

If you’re working with young kids, you may want to do this step ahead of time, since you’ll need sharp scissors to do this task.

Flip your paper plate so that the bottom side is facing up and then paint the entire wreath orange.

If you don’t want an orange wreath, another fun option would be to paint your paper plate black and use orange yarn for your spider web.

Let the paint dry.

Once your wreath is dry, cut a long length of orange yarn (several feet!). It needs to be long enough to wrap around the plate many times for your spider web.

Tape one end of the yarn to the back of your wreath with clear tape.

Grab a paper plate and some yarn to weave your own web with this fun and spooky Spider Web Wreath kids Halloween craft this October.

Start wrapping the yarn around the wreath in all different directions. Go back and forth, sideways, diagonally, and around and around.

Keep wrapping until you reach the end of your yarn piece.

Secure the other end of the yarn to the back of your wreath with tape.

Finally, you can add your spider to your spider web wreath. (Or do like we did and add many spiders!)

We found that using small pieces of yarn to tie our spider rings to the web worked best. Add as many spiders as you want. We had a few busy, busy spider webs!

And, when you’re ready to plan another movie night, check out all of our recommended family friendly movies here.

Settle in for a fun family movie night with your kids to watch one of these awesome choices from the Top 10 Sports Movies for families.

Note: I pulled the age suggestions from Common Sense Media. These suggestions are just that – a suggestion. You know your kids better than anyone and can best make the decision as to what movies are best for your family.

Sports Movies for Families with Kids under 10

Settle in for a fun family movie night with your kids to watch one of these awesome choices from the Top 10 Sports Movies for families.

Air Bud (ages 6+, rated PG) Usually, I try to find movies that appeal to both kids and parents, but I’ll confess that this choice is much more appealing to kids. But, it’s a cute movie for kids who love dogs – and sports. Plus, it’s the sports movie that best appeals to the younger kids.

The Rookie (ages 7+, rated G) The Rookie is the story of a high school baseball coach who promises his team that if they’ll win the division title, he’ll try out for the major leagues. This movie is great for families, but may not be as appealing to younger kids because the movie revolves around an adult and not kids.

Cool Runnings (ages 8+, rated PG) Cool Runnings is a funny and positive movie inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team’s appearance at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. It’s a fun choice if you love underdog stories.

Miracle (ages 8+, rated PG) If you’ve got hockey fans, this movie about the United States hockey teams’ unlikely gold medal victory in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. And even if you’re not hockey fans, you’ll enjoy this movie and will be cheering along the whole time.

The Sandlot (ages 8+, rated PG) This story about shenanigans of a pick-up neighborhood baseball team in the 1950’s. This movie is full of nostalgia and is a family favorite at our house. This movie does include swearing, including by some of the kids, so if that bothers you, you may want to pre-screen it.

Sports Movies for Families with Kids ages 10 and up

Settle in for a fun family movie night with your kids to watch one of these awesome choices from the Top 10 Sports Movies for families.

A League of Their Own (ages 10+, rated PG) A League of Their Own is a classic sports movie based on the All-American Girls Professional Girls Baseball League from the 1940’s. It’s full of positive female role models with a good message about teamwork.

Invincible (ages 10+, rated PG) I love this underdog movie about a 30-year-old down on his luck man who goes to open try-outs for the Philadelphia Eagles and makes the team. It’s a great movie that shows the power of dreams and that it’s never to late to chase them.

Little Giants (ages 10+, rated PG) What happens when you don’t make a peewee football team because you’re a girl? Well, hopefully your dad volunteers to coach your own rag-tag football team. This movie is full of potty-humor and has some swearing, but overall it’s a fun and positive choice.

Mighty Ducks (ages 11+, rated PG) The Mighty Ducks is the story of a ragtag hockey team and their coach, who doesn’t even want to be coaching but has to because of a community service violation. This is a fun and positive movie about teamwork and the joy of sports. But, like a few other choices here, there is some swearing which makes it more suitable for older kids than for younger ones.

Rudy (ages 11+, rated PG) I will confess that Rudy is one of my all-time favorite movies (and I’m not even a football fan). It’s based on the true-story of an underdog who overcomes great odds to play football for Notre Dame. You cheer, you’ll cry, and you’ll have a great time watching this with your family.

Which one of these sports movies for families are you going to watch for your next family movie night? Do you have a favorite that didn’t make the list?

Halloween Shape Poems Writing Activity

October 2, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Most of the projects we’ve done for Halloween have been crafts.

We do love crafts, especially holiday crafts. But, I did want to sneak in a little learning with some Halloween Shape Poems.

My 2nd grader can get overwhelmed quite easily when it comes to writing, but she’s always responded well to poetry.

She gets excited about writing poetry, so many of our at-home writing projects are about poetry.

When considering after school projects, it’s important to keep your kids interests in mind. I don’t want to contribute to burn out!

Create the poetry invitation

I kept the set-up for this project easy by going with simple Halloween-inspired shapes.

I don’t have any printables for you this time because I drew the shapes on construction paper.

We used a ghost and a pumpkin. A witch’s hat and candy corn are a couple of other simple shapes you could consider.

Don’t worry about perfection. My pumpkin is a bit wonky, but I think I’m the only one that noticed!

Draw your shape, outline it in black, and cut it out.

Then, take a ruler and draw straight lines approximately 1-1/2 inches apart. My girls still write big, so I wanted to give them plenty of room. Plus, I didn’t want to overwhelm them with too many lines.

Write your Halloween Shape Poems

The fun thing about these Halloween shape poems is that you already know your subject. Your subject is the shape of your paper.

Sometimes choosing a topic can be the biggest hurdle to jump when it comes to creative writing.

The only rules about shape poems are that the poem should be about the shape and it should fit inside the shape. Other than that, anything goes!

Get a little creative when you write these fun Halloween shape poems. It's a fun Halloween writing activity for elementary kids.

Each girl wrote at their own level. My 2nd grader decided to write a rhyming poem and had fun with some silly rhymes.

My kindergartner just wrote a few lines about pumpkins. She came up with the lines and I wrote them for her. This is not a project I would have done with her alone at this point, but because she always wants to participate, I gave her extra help to keep it skill appropriate.

I love the poems the girls came up with and they are quite pleased with it themselves.

They’ve already added music to the ghost poem. If they keep that up, I may have to start calling them aspiring song writers.
