Acorn Gratitude Banner Craft for Kids

October 23, 2018 By Terri Thompson

How often do you talk about gratitude with your kids?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t do it often enough.

Every November, it hits me. We need to talk about gratitude. I don’t focus enough on it the rest of the year. It’s time to get on it.

This Acorn Gratitude Banner was really simple to create. It got us all thinking about the things we are thankful for that we often take for granted. Plus, it turns into a cute decoration perfect for the Thanksgiving season.

And, since I know you’ll want to make even more holiday crafts, check out all of our Thanksgiving crafts for kids at this link.

Make Your Acorns for Your Banner

We started with a pile of acorns. I used brown construction paper and drew some simple acorn shapes. I was able to get four acorns per sheet of paper.

Once I had my acorns drawn, I traced each one with a black Sharpie to help the details stand out.

If you aren’t confident in your drawing ability, there are plenty of examples online. Print out an acorn coloring sheet and use it as a template for your acorns. (This simple acorn coloring page would be perfect.)

We’ll be using these acorns to make our simple gratitude banner.

Create your gratitude banner

I gave my girls an equal number of acorns and asked them to write something they were thankful for on each each acorn. They thought for a while, consulted each other, and finally chose the things they wanted to write.

They were incredibly practical and listed such things as shelter, clothing, and beds. It makes me feel good to see that they realized these things that we so often take for granted and things to be grateful for.

Once they were done, I clipped out acorns to a piece of twine with a few simple clothes pin. Make sure to use something sturdy like twine or rope because the clothespin will weigh things down a bit.

I love the way our acorn gratitude banner turned out and I love that we can keep adding acorns to the banner as the month goes along.

This was a great way to start that conversation about gratitude that I had been hoping for.

Top 10 Disney Classic Live Action Movies for Families

October 22, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Even though they were made before my time, I grew up watching a lot of Disney classic live action movies for families.

When I was young, we got our first VCR and movie rental stores were popular. We’d stop by almost every weekend and rent a few movies to enjoy over the weekend. We often picked up one of these Disney classics. I watched all of these movies growing up and have now shared most of them with my own two kids. (There’s still a few that we still need to watch together.)

For your next movie night, try one of these fun choices. They’re fun for the whole family!

And if you enjoy family movie nights, I’ve got so many fun options of Family Friendly Movies you’ll enjoy at this link.

Sometimes old movies are the best for family movie night. These top 10 Disney Classic Live Action Movies for families are great kid-friendly choices.

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

There have been so many great live action Disney movies made over the years, but for this list I only included movies made before 1970.

As with any movie, they are reflections of the time period in which they are made. You’ll sometimes find stereotypes of its day and the movies can feel dated at times. But, that is the case with any old movie.

These Disney classic live action movies for families are all fun and kid-friendly, old-fashioned and tame, and great choices to share with your kids.

Note: I pulled the age suggestions from Common Sense Media. These suggestions are just that – a suggestion. You know your kids better than anyone and can best make the decision as to what movies are best for your family.

Sometimes old movies are the best for family movie night. These top 10 Disney Classic Live Action Movies for families are great kid-friendly choices.

Best Disney Classic Live Action Movies for Families

Pollyanna (ages 6+, NR- nonrated) – If you’re looking for a movie full of old-fashioned fun, look no further than Pollyanna. It’s a fun story of a young orphan girl who brings sunshine and happiness to a small town. It’s fun and sweet and the book it’s based on is also a great family read.

The Parent Trap (ages 6+, rated G) – This is the first of a few movies on this list that were updated and remade. And, while the remake was great, you should definitely treat your self to the 1961 version of The Parent Trap starring Hayley Mills. It’s a fun story of identical twins who were separated as babies when their parents divorced. Watch to see what happens when the girls meet and plot to get their parents back together.

The Love Bug (ages 6+, rated G) – Herbie, the race car with a mind of its own, brings so many laughs to this fun Disney classic. It’s a fun, rollicking adventure! If you enjoy this choice, there are three other Herbie movies to watch.

The Absent Minded Professor (ages 6+, rated G) – Have you ever heard of flubber? This is the movie where it came from. There have been a few remakes of this story of a professor who invents an anti-gravity substance, but I love the 1961 version for it’s old-fashioned silliness. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a funny movie to share with your family.

The Shaggy Dog (ages 6+, rated G) – This is another movie on this list that’s been updated, but you really need to take the time to watch the original. It’s the fun adventures of a family whose teenage son turns into a big sheepdog after finding a magic ring. It’s fun, silly, and sure to get everyone laughing.

Sometimes old movies are the best for family movie night. These top 10 Disney Classic Live Action Movies for families are great kid-friendly choices.

Fun Disney Classic Live Action Movies for Families

Pete’s Dragon (ages 7+, rated G) – This fun movie about a boy and his dragon is a mix of live action and animation. It’s full of fun action, silliness, and great music. This story of friendship is one of my favorites and one I’ve loved sharing with my kids.

Treasure Island (ages 7+. rated G) – Treasure Island, based off the book by Robert Louis Stevenson offers action, adventure, and… pirates! If you’re looking for a great adventure story, this classic is a good kid-friendly choice.

The Apple Dumpling Gang (ages 7+, rated G) – This fun western about a couple of bumbling outlaws is full of laughs, after all it stars two hilarious actors, Don Knotts and Tim Conway. This is a fun, and very funny choice, for family movie night.

Old Yeller (ages 8+, rated G) – I almost didn’t include this one on the list, because I haven’t shown it to my own kids yet. But, it is a classic and it is an excellent movie. It’s a great story about the love of a boy and his dog and you’ll cry for sure. So, my advice, is to know what your kids can handle before showing them this movie. (I’ve got one child who would have a difficult time with this choice). The Common Sense Media review here can help you determine if this movie is a good fit for your family.

Swiss Family Robinson (ages 8+, rated G) – Swiss Family Robinson, the story of a family that is shipwrecked on a deserted island, is another great adventure story for kids. It’s got wild animals, pirates, lots of adventure, but nothing too scary for kids. It’s great fun!

Hot Chocolate Science Experiment

October 17, 2018 By Terri Thompson

I love my girls’ natural curiosity when it comes to science. So, when my daughter asked me “Can we do a hot chocolate science experiment?” I knew it was time to get creative.

Working together, we came up with an amazing STEM activity.

When we make instant hot chocolate, we dissolve the contents of the packet into hot water. We decided to find out if temperature affected the speed that it dissolves.

This hot chocolate science experiment is a fun way to learn about how temperature affects the rate at which hot chocolate dissolves. It's a great STEM activity that uses items you probably already have in your kitchen.

Let’s get started!

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

Supplies Needed for Your Hot Chocolate Science Project

First we needed to gather our supplies. Luckily most of the items were already in our kitchen.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Three heat-proof mugs
Three packets of instant hot chocolate
Measuring cup
Water
Spoons
Stopwatch or timer
Notebook for recording your results.

Fun cocoa science project

How to Do Your Hot Chocolate Science Experiment

We started our experiment by making a prediction. Which temperature of water would dissolve the hot chocolate the quickest?

The girls made their prediction (they chose hot) and then it was time to experiment.

We started by emptying our hot chocolate packets into our mugs, one packet per mug. Then we moved on to testing the different temperatures of water.

We tested each temperature, one at a time. We were very vague with our temperatures, using ice cold water, room temperature water, and hot water. You can always add a kitchen thermometer to measure the temperature of the water to add an extra measurement element to your experiment.

My girls took turns measuring the water, stirring, and operating the stopwatch. We used the digital stopwatch on my phone to time how long the hot chocolate took to dissolve.

STEM Hot Chocolate Activity

For each cup, we measured 6 oz. of water. We used cold water from our refrigerator over ice, lukewarm water from the tap, and I did my grown-up duty and heated water in the microwave for the last mug.

Once the water was added to a mug, one girl started the stopwatch and the other started stirring. We stopped the stopwatch as soon as we saw the hot chocolate had dissolved.

Does Hot Chocolate Dissolve Faster in Hot Water or Cold Water?

We started with the ice cold water. My oldest daughter was in charge of the stirring. She stirred and stirred and stirred some more. It wouldn’t dissolve. Eventually, we made the decision to stop after three minutes. You can see the results above. Disgusting!

We moved on to the room temperature water, which clocked in at 1 minute 38 seconds. And, then the hot water, which only took 28 seconds.

The results:  hot water takes the least amount of time. We predicted that because the instructions said to use hot water when we made hot chocolate. (And, it’s called hot chocolate after all…) But, now we know why we need to use hot water.

Why Does Hot Chocolate Powder Dissolve Faster in Hot Water?

Hot water has more energy than cold water. With more energy, the molecules in the water move faster breaking down the hot chocolate mix quicker.

Once we finished writing our results, we unceremoniously dumped the cold water hot chocolate sludge down the kitchen sink. Ick.

What happened to the other two mugs? They were topped with a dollop of whipped cream and enjoyed!

  2. Empty your hot chocolate packets into your mugs. You need three total mugs with one packet per mug.
  3. Get your stopwatch or timer reader to start measuring your time.
  4. Choose the first mug and add 1 cup (8 oz.) of cold water to your mix.
  5. Start the timer and start stirring. Record how long it takes for your hot chocolate mix to dissolve.
  6. Grab your next mug and add 1 cup of room temperature water to your hot chocolate mix.
  7. Start the timer and start stirring. How long did this one take?
  8. Next, grab your last mug. Have a grown up add 1 cup of hot water to your mug.
  9. Start the timer and start stirring. Record the time it takes to dissolve.
  10. Compare your results to your prediction. Were you right?

Cardboard Tube Spider Craft for Halloween

October 10, 2018 By Terri Thompson

I’m the designated spider killer at our house.

Anytime anyone finds a spider, they come find me. Apparently I’m the only one that that isn’t terrified by these little creatures.

Not only am I not terrified, I actually find them quite interesting. Not kidding. And sometimes a little bit cute. Not kidding either.

So, I thought I’d make them so cute that even my kids would appreciate them and came up with this fun idea: Cardboard Tube Spider Craft for Halloween.

Spiders don't have to be scary, especially when make this fun and simple kids craft, a cardboard tube spider craft for Halloween.

Disclosure: Craftprojectideas.com provided some of the supplies we used to make these spiders. The idea and pictures are my own.

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

Supplies Needed for your Cardboard Tube Spider craft:

Cardboard tubes: toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls
Black paint
Scissors
Black fuzzy craft sticks (pipe cleaners)
Googly eyes

How to make your cardboard tube spider craft for Halloween

Start by cutting your cardboard tube in half (or quarters if using a paper towel roll).

Then, on opposite sides, use a sharp instrument to poke four holes per side. Grownups – please do these first two steps yourself!

I used the tip of a sharp pair of scissors to make my holes. You just need something to punch through the cardboard.

Now it’s time for the kids to take over.

Use your black paint to paint the outside of each tube. Make sure you paint over your holes.

Of course, you don’t have to stick with black here. Use any color you want for a group of fun and funky Halloween spiders. If you do this, use colorful pipe cleaners for the legs too!

After the paint is dry, thread 4 pipe cleaners through the holes. Take one pipe cleaner and thread in one hole, through the middle, and out through the hole directly across from your first hole.. Your 4 pipe cleaners will make 8 legs.

Once you have them all the pipe cleaners threaded, bend and arrange your pipe cleaners to look like spider legs.

For the final step, attach your googly eyes.

When we made our cardboard tube spider craft, some of us used 2 eyes per spider. My youngest daughter decided to be scientifically correct and use 8 eyes on her spider. I think I like that one the best.

Spiders don't have to be scary, especially when make this fun and simple kids craft, a cardboard tube spider craft for Halloween.

Once you’re done, you’ve got some fun spiders for Halloween.

Stand them up on a shelf or attach string and dangle them from the ceiling.

Either way, they’re a fun addition to your Halloween decorations.

See, I told you I could make spiders cute!
