Rainbow Writing Spelling Word Practice

January 2, 2019 By Terri Thompson

Sometimes you just need a little color in your life. It makes everything so bright, cheerful, and fun – even spelling words.

Today we’re going to practice our spelling words with rainbow writing. This is a method I learned from my girls’ teachers over the years. They use it to learn everything from names and phone numbers to sight words and now spelling words.

It’s so easy and so much fun that your kids will want to use it to practice their spelling words all the time.

Let’s grab a few supplies and get started.

Add a little color to your homework with this fun way to practice spelling words, Rainbow Writing. It's a fun way to learn!

What is Rainbow Writing?

Rainbow writing is a fun way to use repetition to help practice spelling words and sight words. It’s a simple process where you use multiple colors of pencil or crayon to create a fun rainbow effect when you write.

How to set up this rainbow spelling activity

You will need some lined paper and colorful writing utensils.

We used crayons, but you can also use colored pencils or colored gel pens. (If you use markers, beware! Your words may end up looking brown and not rainbow colored.)

You’ll also need your child’s list of spelling words.

Add a little color to your homework with this fun way to practice spelling words, Rainbow Writing. It's a fun way to learn!

Rainbow Write Spelling Words

Choose 7 or 8 colors.

Start writing your words with one color, then keep writing over it with each additional color.

When you get done, your words will look like rainbows.

Use this method to write each of your spelling words.

If you’ve got a kid who loves rainbows or just need to brighten a dreary day, try some rainbow writing the next time your child needs to practice spelling words.

Helpful Hints:

You’ll want to write your words bigger than normal to have room to trace with each color. Use two or three lines instead of one to write the words.

If you don’t want to use paper for this project, you can also practice rainbow writing with colored chalk on a chalkboard.

This method isn’t just for spelling words! You can use it to practice sight words, letters, numbers, or even math facts.

How have you used rainbow writing?

Chalkboard Spelling Word Erase

September 26, 2018 By Terri Thompson

I love having a chalkboard at home.

We practice math and sight words on it. We draw pictures and create elaborate scenes for our toys. And, we sometimes leave sweet notes for each other.

Now, we’re going to use it to practice our spelling words with this Chalkboard Spelling Word Erase activity.

How to set-up

You’ll need a chalkboard, chalk, paint brush, and a cup of water.

This is another one of those activities that is super-easy to set up. It won’t take any longer than it takes to fill up the cup of water.

Have your child write out their spelling words with chalk, then use the paintbrush and water to erase all the words. That’s it. Simple, isn’t it?

Your child will be writing their words twice – a perfect amount for spelling practice at home.

We’ve also found that this is a fun way to take a practice spelling test.  Then we’ll write any words that we missed correctly and erase them in water.

Note: You may want to keep a rag available to wipe off the excess water. My daughter has a tendency to use A LOT of water when erasing her words. I can’t imagine she’s the only kids like this!

About the chalkboard

Having a chalkboard at home is really handy, but I know not everyone has one or even has room to keep one.

We’ve got two different chalkboards. The first (and the one used most often) is the top of a table. I simply painted the top of an old table that we keep in the playroom with chalkboard paint. Voila! Instant chalkboard. Plus, it serves a dual purpose as a table.

The other chalkboard we have was the upcycled top of an old, cheap bedside table. I removed the top, painted it with the chalkboard paint, and now we have a small chalkboard we can carry all over the house. Both were easy and cheap.

The next time you want to practice spelling words, grab a chalkboard instead of paper for Chalkboard Spelling Word Erase.

LEGO Spelling Words Activity for Kids

August 28, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Is there anything more fun than LEGOs?

They’re one of the go-to toys at our house and often show up at the top of my girls’ wish lists, competing with books for the number one spot.

So, pulling them out to practice spelling words seemed like a win-win situation for everyone. Let’s make some LEGO Spelling Words.

Put down the pencil and practice spelling by creating LEGO spelling words. It's great fun for little LEGO fans and all kids.

How to set-up

You’ll need a flat LEGO base plate and a pile of random LEGOs.

I found that the pieces that are only one bump wide work the best for building LEGO words.

Put down the pencil and practice spelling by creating LEGO spelling words. It's great fun for little LEGO fans and all kids.

Create LEGO Spelling Words

Using your spelling list, try to build each word with your LEGOs. Some letters will be easier than others (hello, lower case i!), but it’s a fun challenge to try to make each letter.

I went back and forth about whether or not I should provide you with instructions for each of the letters, but in the end I decided not to. Part of the fun is figuring out how to make the letters yourself. I’m sure your LEGO-loving kids are up to the task!

Let your kids use one of their favorite toys to do their homework. It’s a welcome change and lots of fun to create LEGO spelling words!
