Button Flowers: A Spring Flower Craft for Kids

March 26, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Happy first day of spring!

I’ve got a few craft projects coming your way to celebrate the upcoming season starting with this spring flower craft. Grab some buttons and scrap fabric to make these Spring Button Flowers note cards.

I’m sure you know someone (or a few someones) that would love to receive this little bit of spring in their mailbox.

Grab some scrap fabric and buttons to make this pretty spring flower craft for kids. You can turn this craft into a fun note card to send to all your friends or it makes a fun Mother's Day gift for mom or grandma.

We’re ready for spring at the Creative Family household, unfortunately our yard is still covered with many inches of snow and it’s bitterly cold outside.

Longest. Winter. Ever. Sigh…

Anyway, let’s craft, shall we! It may not look like spring outside, but at least we can make it look that way inside with this Spring Button Flowers kids craft.

Supplies Needed:

Fabric scraps
Card stock cut to your desired note card size
Buttons
Green construction paper
Scissors (sharp enough to cut fabric)
Glue
Markers

How to make this spring flower craft

I raided my fabric stash for some brightly colored scraps of fabric. This was one time that my pack rat tendencies actually came in handy. I found a fun array of fabric scraps.

We used the scraps as the base of our spring flowers. We cut circles, triangles, or whatever shape my girls’ little hands could handle.

You’ll want to supervise this part because we were unable to use our child safety scissors for cutting fabric, you’ll need a sharper pair.

After cutting our shapes, we chose a button for the center of each flower.

We laid out all of our flowers before gluing them down, so we could make sure it looked the way we wanted it too.

We used the green construction paper for our grass, sometimes tearing and sometimes cutting.

Then, we either drew our stems and leaves with a green marker or used construction paper strips. Both look great.

After we had everything the way we wanted it, we glued each piece down. You can use regular school glue for this part.

Despite all the snow outside, we spent a very pleasant afternoon making spring flowers.

They all turned out wonderful and I think we may send these out for Easter.

Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?

Pom Pom Caterpillar Craft for Kids

March 20, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Did you ever make a pom pom caterpillar as a child?

I did! I think so many others did too. It’s definitely a classic craft that’s been made over and over again throughout the years.

So, I definitely wanted to try this with my own kids. We added our own little twist by making a cute little leaf for our caterpillars.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

This is a perfect project for kids of all ages.

Toddlers and preschoolers may need a little bit of help. But, I originally made this craft with a 4- and 6-year old, who both made their pom pom caterpillar with very little help.

Supplies Needed

Clothespin
Green craft paint
Pom poms
Pipe cleaner
Googly eyes
Glue
Green card stock (or construction paper)
Black marker

How to make a Pom Pom Caterpillar

First, paint your clothes pin with the green craft paint. You’ll want to paint all sides.

While you’re waiting for your paint to dry, draw a simple leaf shape on your green card stock. Then, outline it in black and cut it out.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

Choose a pom pom for the head and wrap a piece of pipe cleaner around it (see picture above). I cut off approximately 1/3 of the pipe cleaner for each caterpillar.

You don’t have to glue these two pieces together at this point.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

Glue your head to the part of the clothes pin that opens and clips. Since your pipe cleaner is wrapped underneath your pom pom, it will get glued too.

Next glue down the rest of your pom poms in a line down your clothes pin.

To make it easier on the girls, I squirted some glue onto a plastic lid. They dipped their pom poms in the glue making sure there was plenty of glue, then stuck the pom poms to their clothes pin.

Next glue your googly eyes to the head of your caterpillar.

Let it dry completely and then clip your cute little caterpillar to their leaf.

Did you make a pom pom caterpillar as a child? I did and that’s why I wanted my girls to try this project too!

Three Blind Mice Craft for Kids

March 19, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Three blind mice, three blind mice

See how they run, see how they run!

And you know the rest.

Today, we’re going to have some fun with this popular nursery rhyme by making a simple Three Blind Mice craft. Grab your supplies and let’s get started creating.

Supplies Needed:

3 cardboard tubes
Thin cardboard (from a cereal or cracker box)
Grey craft paint
Scissors
Fabric scraps
Glue
Yarn
Black marker

How to make your Three Blind Mice craft

Begin by painting all three of your cardboard tubes with your grey craft paint. Also, paint a portion of your thin cardboard with the same grey paint.

Let each of these dry.

Once your paint is dry, trace a circle to make your ears. You’ll need six ears, two for each of your mice.

I used a half of a plastic Easter egg and found it was just the right size.

Cut out each of your ears.

Cut a small on each side of the top of your cardboard tube. Slide an ear into each slit.

I found that this held securely, but if that’s not the case for you, add a bit of glue to secure your ears.

Next, cut (or tear) a strip of fabric for a blindfold. You’ll need three strips total. We used three different fabric scraps, but they can also all be the same fabric.

Add a stripe of glue across the area where your mouse’s eyes would be to secure your fabric on the cardboard tube. Attach your strip and then tie the strip in back.

Use your black marker to add a nose peeking out from under your blindfold and also add your whiskers.

Finally, cut a length of yarn for your tail and attach it to the bottom back of your tube with glue. Let everything dry.

Now your Three Blind Mice craft is finished! Aren’t they cute? They make the perfect pretend play toy or a simple prop when you’re singing the nursery rhyme.
