Ghost Bookmark Halloween Craft

September 18, 2018 By Terri Thompson

We never have enough bookmarks at our house.

It’s probably because I and my daughters always have several books-in-progress going on at the same time. I know we’re not the only ones.

A lot of things can be used as bookmarks, such as scrap paper, folded Post-It Notes, or junk mail. But, I always prefer a real bookmark.

Free ones or store-bought ones both work, but I really prefer a fun homemade bookmark.

And, since Halloween is coming up, it would be fun to have a spooky bookmark to slip in between the pages. So, grab some supplies and lets make a fun Ghost Bookmark!

Mark your place in your favorite book with this simple Ghost Bookmark Halloween craft for kids. All it takes is a few simple supplies.

Connect the two lines at the top with an arched line.

Connect the two lines at the bottom with a jagged edge.

Shamrock Potato Prints Printmaking Project

March 7, 2018 By Terri Thompson

St. Patrick’s Day is always the perfect excuse to learn more about Ireland. Certainly it’s fun any time of the year, but certainly St. Patrick’s Day always reminds me.

So, let’s go to Ireland, learn a little about Irish folklore, and create a fun shamrock potato prints printmaking project.

Use shamrock potato prints to decorate cards, paper, or notebooks with this fun printmaking project for St. Patrick's Day. It's a fun art project for all ages.

When researching our Irish project, I found a wide selection of Irish folktales and soon settled on Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie DePaola. We love Tomie DePaola books and knew he would tell us a fun tale.

After enjoying the story of Jamie O’Rourke, the laziest man in all of Ireland, we decided not to be lazy and to start crafting. Since the book centered around a potato, we decided to try out potato stamping.

Supplies needed

Potato
Sharp knife (adult use only!)
Green paint
Paper
Paint brushes (foam brushes work best)

Create your potato stamp

The grown-up in charge will have to prep this project.

To make the potato stamps, cut a potato in half. I used a toothpick to “draw” my shamrocks before cutting. Then using the knife I cut around the shamrock to make my stamp.

We made two different styles of stamps. On one, I cut out the shamrock and on the other, I cut a thick outline of the shamrock.

Create with shamrock potato prints

We used the paintbrush to paint some green paint onto our stamp.

I used a couple of different shades of green since we were using shamrocks.

The girls painted and stamped and painted and stamped some more. We weren’t so worried about the end product. This project was all about the process.

The girls enjoyed stamping and seeing the texture from the potatoes.

After they covered their paper, they got creative. Soon our potatoes were completely painted green!

So much fun! You can keep these shamrock potato prints as a fun process art activity or you can use your potato stamp to decorate note cards, notebook covers, wrapping paper, or a fun wall hanging.

Cotton swabs

How to make this Painted Easter Egg Suncatcher

To prep the project, I cut out two Easter egg outlines from the construction paper. I made ours big, using the entire sheet of construction paper. Your older kids can draw and cut out the Easter eggs on their own. You’ll want to do this step for younger ones.

I also cut two squares of the Contact Paper for each Easter egg. Cut them slightly bigger than your Easter egg outlines.

Next, I peeled the backing off of one square of Contact Paper and placed it sticky-side up on our table. I carefully placed the Easter egg outline on the Contact Paper and then it was time to paint. My preschooler used a cotton swab to paint designs inside the outline.

I know you’re wondering what it’s like to paint on the sticky paper.

Will your cotton swabs get stuck? Once you have paint on the end of your cotton swab, it won’t stick to the paper while you are painting. This is the perfect project for dot painting. But, if you’re like my daughter and hate to dot paint, the cotton swab will slide nicely over the sticky paper. It’s not as quick and smooth as regular paper, but you can paint whatever you want on the Easter egg.

Once she moved on to our second egg, my daughter was finished with the cotton swabs. Almost every painting project we do lately, turns into a finger painting project. This project was no exception. She started out with a bit of finger painting and soon dived in with full hand smearing. And you know what? This is the perfect project for finger painting!

Once my preschooler was finished painting, I added a second sheet of Contact Paper over the top to completely seal in the paint. Finish the project off by trimming around the edges. You will need to leave about 1/4 inch of Contact Paper around the edge to keep your project sealed.

I love this painted Easter Egg Suncatcher project for it’s ease and it’s open-ended aspect. Your kids can paint whatever they like on their eggs. Plus, it can be easily adapted for all ages.

Hang them in the window and let the sun shine in. They’re so pretty!
