Practice Spelling Words with Sticky Notes

August 10, 2017 By Terri Thompson

Oh, spelling words. They’re so necessary, but can be so uninspiring.

My daughter has been bringing them home all year and has been stuck taking practice tests or writing them over and over. That gets boring really quick.

I’m always trying to make learning at home interesting. My girls don’t need a repeat of school once they get home.

So I got to thinking about spelling words. What are some creative ways to practice spelling words?

If you're looking for a creative way to practice spelling words, you'll want to try this activity. Grab a pack of sticky notes and use them to build words.

After a few days of brainstorming, I came up with 31 Ways to Practice Spelling Words. They’re hands-on and fun. These are not your normal ways to practice.

I’ll be sharing one idea a day for the next 31 days. Are you ready? Let’s have fun with spelling!

Matisse Craft for Kids: Cut Paper Suncatchers

July 24, 2017 By Terri Thompson

One of my favorite ways to learn about famous artists is to do a project in the style of that artist.

Recently, we learned a little bit about Henri Matisse. We looked at many examples of his work, especially the work he did in the final years of his life when he created with paper cut-outs. He called it “painting with scissors.” You can find examples here. We then set out to do a fun Matisse Craft.

This style of work is so much fun to do. We used tissue paper for our cut-outs to create these Matisse Inspired Suncatchers.

Use the cut paper technique to make beautiful suncatchers with this fun Matisse craft for kids. It will look beautiful on your windows!

Supplies Needed

Colored tissue paper
Clear Contact Paper
Scissors
Painter’s Tape

Prep your Matisse craft

To prep for the project, cut a piece Contact Paper for each child. Ours were about the size of a legal-sized sheet of paper.

You can do any size of suncatcher you want.

Create your cut paper suncatchers

After we looked some examples of Matisse’s paper cut-outs, we talked about ways we could make our projects similar.

The girls noticed that he used large shapes and a lot of curvy lines, so we got the scissors out and started cutting.

We cut a variety of shapes from all the colors of tissue paper we had. I had purchased one of those multi-colored tissue paper packs from the dollar store. There was such a great variety of bright colors.

Once we had a pile of cut-outs, the girls started getting creative. We used the tissue pieces to create our pictures before sticking them to the Contact Paper. My girls arranged and rearranged until they knew what they wanted to create.

When we were ready to create our suncathers, we took the backing off of the piece of  Contact Paper and used painter’s tape to stick it to the table sticky side up.

We’ve made many, many suncatchers and I’ve found that it’s helpful to tape the Contact Paper to the table. That way it won’t move all over the place. If you use painter’s tape, you can remove it easily from the Contact Paper.

Once we were done, we removed the contact paper and stuck it directly on the window. The Contact Paper won’t leave any sticky residue on the window.

If you do want to preserve your suncatchers, you can stick another piece of Contact Paper directly over the first piece, sticky side to sticky side.

Our Matisse creations

In the picture below, the creation at the top is a crazy, dancing alien.

The one at the bottom is a sad, crying face.

I love how they both turned out! My girls were able to capture the spirit of Matisse in their own style. Perfect!

Cardboard Baseball Bat Kids Craft

July 18, 2017 By Terri Thompson

After our salt dough baseballs, we wanted to have a little bit more fun with baseball.

In baseball, you can’t have a ball without a bat. Am I right?

So, to go along with out baseballs we grabbed some recycled materials to make this cardboard baseball bat craft.

Disclosure: This post contains Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for more details.

I found the book Players In Pigtails by Shana Corey at the library and knew the girls would love it.

Players In Pigtails tells the story of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. We learned that “Take Me Out To the Ball Game” was originally written about a baseball-crazy girl named Katie Casey. This book was the story of the fictional Katie Casey.

The girls were thrilled to read about girls playing baseball and loved the story of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.

After reading the story and singing a few rounds of “Take Me Out To the Ball Game,” we designed our own baseball bats.

Supplies Needed

Cardboard (recycled cereal or cracker boxes work well)
Scissors
Paint
Glue
Glitter
Stickers

How to make your cardboard baseball bat

Before we started, I cut a few simple baseball bat shapes out of the cardboard and then set out a fun selection of supplies for decorating our bats, such as glitter, paint, and stickers.

After we read the book, I asked the girls to design a bat that they would like to use while playing for the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.

They thought for awhile about their design, and then off they went!

My girls got creative and started painting, gluing, and glittering.

And glittered… a lot!

Have you ever seen such a glittery baseball bat?

After the glitter dried, we decorate more. My girls grabbed the stickers and went to town. We had some leftover 4th of July stickers that worked well for the project.

After a lot of decorating, my girls declared their bats finished. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such flashy bats! They look fantastic!

Ask your kids to design their own baseball bats. It would be fun to see what they come up with.

Grab a few supplies from the recycling bin and craft closet to make this fun colorful and glittery cardboard baseball bat kids craft.
