Nature Activity Books for Young Explorers

March 27, 2018 By Terri Thompson

It’s so much fun to explore nature. You can just wander, observe, and learn so much.

But, sometimes you want some help guiding you and teaching you. I’ve found a few nature activity books that do just that and I wanted to tell you about them.

They’re fun. They’ll inspire you to get outside. And, you’ll learn a lot in the process.

Get inspired to go out and explore nature with one of these fun nature activity books. They're full of fun kids activities and family activities. You'll have fun and learn a lot too.

Disclosure: The Nature Arts and Crafts ebook was provided to me free of charge, the other two books I purchased myself. They’re all books that I highly recommend! There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

We used all three of these nature activity books for summer learning. We explored our backyard and made some fun creations inspired by nature. These books all got two thumbs up from each of my girls (and me too).

I hope we get them out again and again!

A Little Bit of Dirt by Asia Citro

Get inspired to explore and create with A Little Bit of Dirt: 55+ Science and Art Activities to Reconnect Children with Nature by Asia Citro. It’s got fun ideas for nature exploration, and creative ways to use nature finds.

You can make Texture Garden, play Rain Drums, or do some Pounding Art. Doesn’t that sound like fun? I love that the ideas appeal to all ages of kids, from toddlers and preschoolers to my own elementary aged kids.

We had tons of fun making our Acrylic Paint Sun Print t shirts. The instructions were clear and the project was easy for my girls to do. Plus, the results were stunning!

We have plans for several more projects in this book. It should be fun!

100 Backyard Activities by Colleen Kessler

Learn all you can about your own yard with this fun book, 100 Backyard Activities That are the Dirtiest, Coolest, Creepy-Crawliest Ever by Colleen Kessler. It’s packed full of ideas to help you learn all about the creatures and plants in your own backyard.

This book is better suited for your older kids in elementary or even middle school, but it can also work great with mixed age groups.

We decided to try some of the roly poly investigation activities because we have so many of those fun little bugs living around our yard. My girls made the Critter Choice Container and then performed the experiments. The were observing, recording, and having fun. They learned a lot!

There are just so many ideas in this book, that we’ll be getting it out year after year. It will be awhile before my kids grow out of this one!

Nature Arts and Crafts Printables by Penny Whitehouse

This fun ebook (and printable pack) of Nature Arts and Crafts by Penny Whitehouse, will inspire you to get out and get creative with nature. You’ll find over 30 printables to help you get creative from making patterns and finding symmetry to fun nature weaving ideas. You just need to print the page for the activity you’ll want to do.

This book is divided into two sections. The first will show you all the fun activities and the second section has all the printables.

We spent a fun afternoon creating with the Nature Dress Up printables. The printable includes the face, arms, and legs, and you get to use nature finds to make all the clothes, hair, and shoes for your sweet little nature kids. We had a lot of fun and my girls found some creative ways to make their clothes.

This fun book, cannot be found on Amazon like the other two, but you can find it here. It’s a great source for nature fun and you can use the printables over and over again since you’ll be printing them yourself.

Button Flowers: A Spring Flower Craft for Kids

March 26, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Happy first day of spring!

I’ve got a few craft projects coming your way to celebrate the upcoming season starting with this spring flower craft. Grab some buttons and scrap fabric to make these Spring Button Flowers note cards.

I’m sure you know someone (or a few someones) that would love to receive this little bit of spring in their mailbox.

Grab some scrap fabric and buttons to make this pretty spring flower craft for kids. You can turn this craft into a fun note card to send to all your friends or it makes a fun Mother's Day gift for mom or grandma.

We’re ready for spring at the Creative Family household, unfortunately our yard is still covered with many inches of snow and it’s bitterly cold outside.

Longest. Winter. Ever. Sigh…

Anyway, let’s craft, shall we! It may not look like spring outside, but at least we can make it look that way inside with this Spring Button Flowers kids craft.

How to make this spring flower craft

I raided my fabric stash for some brightly colored scraps of fabric. This was one time that my pack rat tendencies actually came in handy. I found a fun array of fabric scraps.

We used the scraps as the base of our spring flowers. We cut circles, triangles, or whatever shape my girls’ little hands could handle.

You’ll want to supervise this part because we were unable to use our child safety scissors for cutting fabric, you’ll need a sharper pair.

After cutting our shapes, we chose a button for the center of each flower.

We laid out all of our flowers before gluing them down, so we could make sure it looked the way we wanted it too.

We used the green construction paper for our grass, sometimes tearing and sometimes cutting.

Then, we either drew our stems and leaves with a green marker or used construction paper strips. Both look great.

After we had everything the way we wanted it, we glued each piece down. You can use regular school glue for this part.

Despite all the snow outside, we spent a very pleasant afternoon making spring flowers.

They all turned out wonderful and I think we may send these out for Easter.

Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?

Let’s Go On a Listening Walk

March 22, 2018 By Terri Thompson

If you want to add a peaceful element to your next walk with your kids, go on a listening walk.

Listen carefully… what do you hear?

Use your ears to go on a fun listening scavenger hunt while you walk around your neighborhood with this fun walk idea for families, a listening walk.

You can take an informal walk where the goal is to see just how many things you can hear.

Pom Pom Caterpillar Craft for Kids

March 20, 2018 By Terri Thompson

Did you ever make a pom pom caterpillar as a child?

I did! I think so many others did too. It’s definitely a classic craft that’s been made over and over again throughout the years.

So, I definitely wanted to try this with my own kids. We added our own little twist by making a cute little leaf for our caterpillars.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

This is a perfect project for kids of all ages.

Toddlers and preschoolers may need a little bit of help. But, I originally made this craft with a 4- and 6-year old, who both made their pom pom caterpillar with very little help.

Googly eyes
Glue
Green card stock (or construction paper)
Black marker

How to make a Pom Pom Caterpillar

First, paint your clothes pin with the green craft paint. You’ll want to paint all sides.

While you’re waiting for your paint to dry, draw a simple leaf shape on your green card stock. Then, outline it in black and cut it out.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

Choose a pom pom for the head and wrap a piece of pipe cleaner around it (see picture above). I cut off approximately 1/3 of the pipe cleaner for each caterpillar.

You don’t have to glue these two pieces together at this point.

Grab some simple craft supplies to make this fun classic craft with your kids, Pom pom Caterpillar. It's so easy to make and looks so cute on it simple paper leaf.

Glue your head to the part of the clothes pin that opens and clips. Since your pipe cleaner is wrapped underneath your pom pom, it will get glued too.

Next glue down the rest of your pom poms in a line down your clothes pin.

To make it easier on the girls, I squirted some glue onto a plastic lid. They dipped their pom poms in the glue making sure there was plenty of glue, then stuck the pom poms to their clothes pin.

Next glue your googly eyes to the head of your caterpillar.

Let it dry completely and then clip your cute little caterpillar to their leaf.
