Mom’s Bookshelf: 15 Minutes Outside

April 30, 2013 By Terri Thompson

In the past few months I’ve read several books that I would love to recommend to you. Some are kids activities books, some are parenting books, and other are great books about simplifying your life. I truly do love all of these books and can’t wait to share them all with you.

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

I first purchased Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids by Rebecca P. Cohenfor two reasons.

First, I believe outdoor play is very important for my girls, but sometimes I need a little extra push.

Second, I can never resist a book of lists! This book did not disappoint at all.

Cohen begins the book by talking about the importance of outdoor play, then she continues on to show you just how easy it is to get outside and have fun.

She gives you 365 ideas, one for every day of the year. Her ideas are not at all complicated. They’re easy to plan, cost little to no money, and many can be done spur of the moment.

Some of the ideas you may do all of the time; others may be something you’ve never thought of before.

But, I guarantee you’ll find some ideas that will make you want to put the book down and rush outside with your kids.

The book is divided by month to help you find ideas appropriate to your current season.

She has active play, relaxation ideas, learning ideas, nature play, and more.

For example, in January she suggests visiting a playground after a snowfall. In April, she suggests looking for tadpoles. An in September, she suggests taking your homework outside.

We don’t do the activities in order in this book, nor have we even gotten close to doing them all.

But, it’s always on the bookshelf. I’ll pull it down; flip through it; and am guaranteed to find something fun to do.

Today might be a great day to make our own ring toss game and take it outside to play. Maybe we’ll roll down a hill or play “kick the can” (Cohen tells you how to play it, if you don’t already know).

If you’re looking for a treasure of outdoor play ideas, pick up a copy of Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids. You won’t be disappointed.

February 19, 2013 By Terri Thompson

Thank you to all my newsletter subscribers who’ve been sticking with me even though you haven’t seen a newsletter in your email inbox for quite awhile. I didn’t feel that my original newsletter was beneficial to either me or you. So I’ve been working on a new format and have created the Creative Family Fun Weekly Wrap-up.
What can you expect?
  • A quick list of all that I posted in the last week. If you want to read a post, you can click over to the blog to see it.
  • A snapshot of what I’ve been pinning in the past week. I won’t overwhelm you. I’ll just provide you with 3 to 4 fun ideas.
  • One fabulous and fun “way to play” for the weekend.
I’ll send out the newsletter on Saturdays to give you time to plan fun activities for the weekend, or just settle in and read your favorite blogs. If you are interested in subscribing, please use the form below.

If you are already a newsletter subscriber, you will begin getting the Weekly Wrap-up this weekend. If you don’t want to receive an email weekly – I will be sad- but you can unsubscribe using the link on the first newsletter.

Favorite Posts of 2012 & Setting the Tone for 2013

January 1, 2013 By Terri Thompson

I recently shared my 10 most popular posts and now I’d like to share a few more. These posts were among my favorites and they’re also doing double-duty by setting the tone for 2013. So without further ado, here are my favorites of 2012.

I’ve always believed in the importance of teaching children about the world around them. They need to know that there is more to life than what they can see from their own front door. So in May, I shared 10 Ways to Explore the World Without Leaving Home. I practice what I preach and implemented all of these ideas into our home.

In 2013, join me in Raising Global Citizens. I’ve been toying with an idea I’ve dubbed “Project Around the World.” We’ll be travelling the world in 2013, right in our own living room. Come along! Maybe you’ll celebrate a new holiday, try a new dish inspired by a country you’ve always wanted to visit, or just read books set in different cultures. I plan on giving you lots of ideas for exploring the world in the new year.

Several times in the past year, I gave you ideas for Creative Family Fun Nights. One of my favorites were the Family Olympics. It was chock full of activities for the whole family to do together, to get out and play, to  laugh, and have fun.

Join me in making 2013 the Year of the Family. The title of my blog is Creative Family Fun and this year, I’d like to focus on the word family. I’ll be publishing even more ideas for Creative Family Fun Nights.

In November I share a new daily practice we started, our gratitude bowl. This simple exercise has proven to be very valuable to our family. It’s become habit and has set the stage for a peaceful dinner time.

Join me in a quest to Add Value to Family Dinner Time in 2013. Use the time to get to know each other better. Have conversations, tell stories, share your dreams & wishes, laugh, and enjoy each other.

Let’s rock 2013!

Hearts to Newtown Project

December 18, 2012 By Terri Thompson

Today, many blogs are taking a day of silence to honor the victims of Newtown. I had planned on doing the same until a read a post on The Mary Frances Project late last night and found out about the Hearts to Newtown project. So instead, I want to tell you about the project and how to participate.

The premise is simple. Have your children make a heart to honor Newtown. Here are the words from their Facebook page, “We just want to fill the walls of the school, the Newtown library, city hall, the hospital with reminders that children from all over the country are with them. Have your child draw a picture on a heart piece of paper of something “happy or good,” include their name, age, and state, and send it to: Include your school, scout troop, baseball team or church in the effort!”
Cut your heart from a standard 8-1/2 x 11-inch paper. If your children are too young to know about the tragedy, just have them decorate the heart with happy things. Include your child’s first name, age, and state.
Once completed you can send your hearts to: P.O. Box 754 Bethel, CT 06801
For more information, you can visit the Hearts to Newtown Facebook page.

Please join me in honoring the victims of Newtown.
