Thanksgiving Word Family Game: Word Family Turkeys

November 8, 2017 By Terri Thompson

Word families and turkeys go together like…

Well… hmmmmmm…

Do they go together? They do now when you make this fun Thanksgiving word family game.

Build the turkeys’ tails when you choose the correct word family. This game is fun to play and so simple to make. Let’s get started!

Supplies needed:

1 small bathroom cup for each word family
Brown construction paper
Yellow construction paper
Glue
Double-sided tape
Black Sharpie
4 colored craft sticks for each word family

How to make your turkey cups:

These turkey cups are very easy and quick to make. Decide how many word families you’re going to use. I made four, but feel free to make more or less. You’ll need one cup for each word family.

Cut one brown circle for each of your cups. I traced the bottom of my little cup and found it was the perfect size for my turkeys’ heads. Also, cut one small triangle for each turkey. This will be your beak.

Glue the small beak in the middle of each brown head. Then, use your black Sharpie to make two eyes. Simple.

Use the double-sided tape to attach your turkey head to your cup. Place it near the bottom to leave room to write your word family on the cup. Use the black marker to write the word family on the cup.

Make your tail feathers

Choose four craft sticks for each Word Family Turkey. I chose four different colors for each word family.

Write a different word on the end of each craft stick.

For example, I chose the -op word family. My words were flop, chop, top, hop. Write four different words for each word family.

If you need help coming up with word families, you can check out my word family printable resources here.

How to play this Thanksgiving word family game

Set up the game by placing all your turkey cups on a table. Mix up your craft sticks and place them face-down near the cups.

This game can be played individually or in pairs. It’s very easy. Pick up a craft stick, read the word, and then place it in the correct turkey cup. When all the crafts sticks are in the correct spot, your turkeys will have tails!

When you’re done playing, stack the cups and place all the craft sticks inside. This game stores easily and is ready to play over and over again.

Fun variations to this game:

Add more feathers to your turkey. You don’t have to stick with just four craft sticks per cup. Add as many as you would like. Although be careful, you can easily knock a turkey off balance if the craft sticks get too heavy.

Make it a busy bag. This game stacks together and stores easily. Add it to a bag or a small container and it’s easy to take on the go or to use for quiet time.

Leave the words off the craft sticks. Add an extra challenge and have your child come up with words that go with each word family. Let them write the words on the craft sticks themselves. Once they’ve made the game, they can play it over and over.

What variation will you try?

Turkey Suncatcher Thanksgiving Craft for Kids

November 6, 2017 By Terri Thompson

We’ve been on a bit of a suncatcher kick lately. I love to see them hanging in the window. Even on the cloudiest days, they can bring in a bit of cheery sunlight.

We’ve made them for Halloween, Easter, and any day in between. Now we just need some for Thanksgiving.

Our turkey suncatcher was such an easy Thanksgiving craft to make and so much fun. It brightens up the window and make me smile every day.

And, once you’ve made your suncatcher, check out all of our Thanksgiving crafts for kids to find more fun activities.

Brighten up your window with this colorful Thanksgiving craft for kids, Turkey Suncatcher. It's a fun craft for preschool and elementary kids.

Supplies Needed

Clear contact paper
Colored tissue paper
Brown construction paper
Scissors
Red and Black Markers

How to make your Turkey Suncatcher

You want to begin by making the frame for your turkey tail. I drew a loopy pattern for my tail; it looked a bit like a bush. Make it the size of a whole sheet of construction paper.

Use your leftover paper to make a simple neck and head piece.

Use the markers to draw your turkey face.

Measure your turkey tail and cut 2 pieces of clear contact paper for each suncatcher. You want to make sure you have extra contact paper around all the edges.

Peel the backing off of one piece of contact paper and place it sticky side up on the table. I usually tape down the edges a bit to keep the contact paper from sliding around. Place your tail outline and your turkey head face-down on your contact paper.

Next, and this is the best part, start tearing pieces from your colored tissue paper. We used red, orange, green, and yellow tissue paper.

Fill in the open part of your turkey tail with your tissue paper bits. If you’re doing this project with a toddler, go ahead and tear the tissue pieces for them. And if you’ve got a toddler, this really is a perfect Thanksgiving craft to do with them. My girls always loved sticking things on contact paper at that age and we made many suncatchers when they were little.

Preserve your Thanksgiving Suncatcher for years to come

After you’ve filled in your tail, carefully attach your second piece of contact paper over top. You’ll want your turkey to be in between both sheets of contact paper. I still do this step for the girls since it is a bit difficult to line everything up. It’s not a necessary step, but by doing this you’ll be able to pack your turkeys away and hang up your Thanksgiving suncatcher year after year.

Display your turkey suncatcher in a bright window

We’ve got our turkey suncatcher hanging up on our patio door and it’s so bright and cheery. We may have to make a few more to brighten our windows!

Gratitude Conversation Starters for Families

October 30, 2017 By Terri Thompson

How often do you talk about gratitude with your kids?

I try to make gratitude an ongoing conversation at our house. But it’s not always easy. Thank goodness for these gratitude conversation starters.

I don’t ever want my girls to take our wonderful life for granted. Even though we have had some trials and some not-so-good days, we are still very fortunate.

It’s not always easy to have that conversation and sometimes I’m at a loss. I don’t want to ask the same questions every day. That’s an easy way to get everyone to lose interest! I want to get my girls thinking and looking at all areas of their life. I want them to look at the little things, not just the big picture.

So, I started brainstorming and jotting down questions. When I was done, I had a set of conversation starters to use to get us talking.

Disclosure: There are Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links in this article which means, at no additional cost to you, we could receive compensation for our recommendations. You can read our full disclosure policy on our Disclosure Page for more details.

The Benefits of Conversation Starters

I love conversation starters because they take all the awkwardness out of starting a conversation. Just grab a strip and read the question out loud.

Mom and Dad can ask the kids or the kids can ask the parents.

They give you things to talk about that you may not have thought about before.

Gratitude Conversation Starters

Here are some examples of the questions your will find in this set of gratitude conversation starters:

What is your favorite part about your home? Why?

What abilities do you have that you are grateful for?

What is one of your favorite things to do? Why are you grateful for it?

What is something about your teacher that you are grateful for?

Who did something nice for you today? What was it?

What is something you love doing with your parents?

This is just a sample of the questions I came up with. In all, I have 20 questions covering the big and little things in life. Keep scrolling to “How to Use Your Conversation Starters” for a free pdf you can download and print.

How to Use Your Conversation Starters

Print off a set of conversations starters (it will take 2 pieces of paper). Cut the strips apart and find a fun way to display them.

You can put them in a cute thankful jar or fold them up and put them in a bowl. Place one in front of everyone’s plate at dinner time. It really doesn’t matter. What’s important is the conversation that develops.

You can find your free pdf of the Gratitude Conversation Starters here.

These are perfect for dinner time or even a long car trip. Pull out a strip and have everyone answer. Let the conversation flow. Remember all the little things and be grateful for your wonderful life with these gratitude conversation starters.

Incorporate Your Gratitude Conversation Starters Into Your Dining Room Decor:

Store your conversations starters in a pretty container such as:

A pretty jar with a chalk label that you can personalize.

An elegant blessings bowl with gold accents.

A rustic “Count Your Blessing” ceramic gratitude jar.

Or use a simple and colorful gratitude coffee mug.

No-Sew Ghost Pencil Topper

October 18, 2017 By Terri Thompson

We’ve made our Jack-O-Lantern Pencil Holder, now we need something to put in them.

How about a No-Sew Ghost Pencil Topper?

These are so easy to make and they would make a perfect classroom treat, since they are simple and inexpensive. Plus, there’s no sugar!

Let’s grab a few supplies and get to work.

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

This post contains Amazon Affiliate and other affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for more information.

Supplies Needed:

White felt
Black felt
Tacky Glue
Scrap paper (for pattern)
Pencils

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

Make your pattern

Start by creating a simple pattern with your scrap paper. You will want all of your ghost pieces to be the same size and shape. Use your pencil to get an idea of the size. You’ll want it to fit easily over the top of the pencil, but not be too long.

I drew the jagged edge on the bottom of my pattern, but ended up just cutting a straight edge. I found an easier way to do that jagged edge and I’ll tell you about it later in the steps.

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

Make your No-Sew Ghost Pencil Topper

Use your pattern to cut out two pieces of white felt per pencil topper.

When I first cut these out, I left the bottom straight, then held the two pieces together. I was able to cut the jagged edge on both pieces at one time.

It was much easier this way and helped ensure that both pieces were identical.

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

After you have your white pieces cut, cut a few face pieces from your black felt.

I did not use a pattern for this because the pieces were small. Plus, without a pattern, you can make different faces on all your ghosts.

You’ll just need two to three small round pieces for each ghost.

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

Use your Tacky Glue and run a thin line of glue around the outer edge of one of your ghost pieces. Just do the top and side. You need to leave the bottom open so you can slip your pencil inside.

Carefully line up your two pieces and attach together. Hold together for about 30 seconds to make sure they stick together.

Next, glue down your black pieces to make your ghost faces.

This no-sew ghost pencil topper is a fun Halloween gift that kids can make for their friends. Or, make a whole batch for a great non-food classroom treat.

Voila! Aren’t they cute!

Make sure to let your ghosts dry thoroughly while lying flat. Once they’re dry, it’s time to pop them on the top of your pencil.

Perfect as a classroom treat

This craft is easy enough for your elementary-aged kids and tweens to do themselves. Let them make a few for their friends or you can even make a whole pile for the classroom.

If you’re making these in bulk, you can get approximately four to five ghost pencil toppers from each sheet of white felt and countless face pieces from your black felt. It’s a very inexpensive craft to make for a group.
