After School Learning Ideas

A Week of After School Activities Plus the After School Linky Party – Week 4

September 28, 2015 By Terri Thompson

Are you ready for another week of after school fun? I sure am. I’m so excited about all the ideas I’m finding to do with my girls. This week I’ve put together another fun after school planner for you of crafts, art projects, and learning ideas.

(Pictured from left to right.)

Day 1: Make scarecrow silhouettes and decorate for fall. School Time Snippets shows you how to make this fun art project.

Day 2: Learn about geography through currency collections. Rainy Day Mum shows you how, plus provides a free, printable currency collections sheet.

Day 3: Make silly monster puppets! A Little Pinch of Perfect has all the details.

Day 4: Make washi tape fall leaves. The Educators’ Spin on It shows you how to make this simple project.

Day 5: Decorate votive holders with duck tape. This would make a great homemade gift! Check out Grandma Ideas for the details.

Check the linky below for even more great ideas.

September 14, 2015 By Terri Thompson

It’s another week of fun after school activities. Check back every Monday for the After School Linky Party. Last week’s link-up was amazing with so many fun activities. Here are five of my favorites – enough for a week’s worth of after school fun. (They’re pictured in the above photo left to right.)

Day 1: Make cursive doodle art with Home Literacy Blueprint.
Day 2: Paint leaves with fizzing fall paint. Check Out Mini Monets and Mommies for the details.
Day 3: Use bubble wrap to review sight words, math facts, or more with Hands On: As We Grow.
Day 4: Find out how leaves breathe with a backyard demonstration of leaf transpiration. So cool! Find all the details at Gift of Curiosity.
Day 5: Multiply Domino Fractions using free printable game cards at Relentlessly Fun, Deceptively Educational.

A Week of After School Activities plus the After School Linky Party

September 7, 2015 By Terri Thompson

I’ve long been a fan (and participant) in the After School Linky Party, so I’m thrilled to announce that now I’m a host! Stop by every Monday to find some of the best activities and ideas for elementary-aged kids. I know you’re a fan of after school activities and so am I. I’m excited to share even more great ideas with you.

Even though this is my first week hosting, I’ve still rounded up my favorites from last week, enough for a week’s worth of after school activities.

Day 2: Play a bottle cap sight words game with There’s Just One Mommy.
Day 3: Find out what weighs more than an apple with Gift of Curiosity.
Day 4: Make a Play Doh map of the United States with Mama Smiles.

K-5 Learning Review

March 21, 2014 By Terri Thompson

*Disclosure: I was offered an extended free trial of K5 Learning
in exchange for my fair review.
This post also contains affiliate links.
My girls love using the computer and they’re always asking for computer time. So, when K5 Learning contacted me to see if we wanted to try their service, I jumped at the chance.
K5 Learning was designed for after school (and home school) use to help kids in grades K – 5 with reading and math. The lessons are short and fun. They recommend beginning with an assessment, which we did. In doing so, we ended up with lessons that were just right for my 1st grader. She wasn’t bored with lessons that were too easy, nor was she intimidated by stuff that was too hard. I also appreciated the chance to see exactly how she was doing in math and reading. She was a bit ahead of the game and enjoyed having the extra challenge after school.
K5 Learning is entirely online, but it is safe. The lessons open up in a new window and the kids can’t navigate out. There are no ads, chat functions, or external links. It’s easy to navigate. My 4-year-old had no problem navigating her way around the program.
What did I like about it?
I loved that it was customized to my girls’ abilities and not their grade level. My 4-year old worked on her ABCs while my 1st grader worked on reading comprehension and vocabulary.
I loved that parents have access to assessment reports. You can find out where your child excels and where they need extra help. You can even assign specific lessons for those things that they need extra help with.
I loved that my girls enjoyed it. They had fun. It was educational, but they didn’t care. They giggled. They learned.
I loved that my girls learned A LOT. I was amazed at every thing they learned during our 6-week trial.
Do you want to learn more?
Check out the K5 Learning informational page at this link.
So, how much does it cost?
You pay $25 a month for the first child and $15 a month for each additional child. You can also pay a year at a time $199 for the first child and $129 for each additional child. You do get to try it out before entering in a credit card number. K5 Learning offers a 14-day free trial with no obligations. Try it and see if you like it.
Is it worth it?
I think so.
